How Lake Galena Was Made
Lake Galena was created in 1974. Workers built a dam across a stream called Smallpox Creek. A dam is like a big wall that holds back water, forming a lake. Smallpox Creek is a smaller stream that eventually flows into the mighty Mississippi River.
Where Is Lake Galena?
Lake Galena gets its water from a large area called a watershed. This watershed is about 10,591 acres (42.86 square kilometers) in size. The lake itself is located about 710 feet (216 meters) above sea level.
The lake covers an area of 225 acres (91 hectares). It has about 7 miles (11 kilometers) of shoreline. Lake Galena is part of a private community near Galena, Illinois, known as the Galena Territory.
Fun Things to Do at Lake Galena
People mostly use Lake Galena for fun activities. These include boating and fishing.
Managing the Lake
A non-profit group called The Galena Territory Association helps manage the lake. They also run a marina on the east side of the lake. A marina is a place where boats can dock and get supplies.
Golf Course Views
Part of the Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa's North golf course is also near the lake. The eighth hole of this golf course crosses a small inlet of Lake Galena.
