Lake Karachay facts for kids

Lake Karachay is a small lake found in the Ural Mountains in Russia. It is located in Chelyabinsk Oblast, close to a town called Ozyorsk. Ozyorsk used to be a "closed city," meaning people needed special permission to enter or leave it. The people there worked at the Mayak nuclear facility, which built Russia's first nuclear power plant.

Sadly, Lake Karachay became a dumping ground for dangerous radioactive waste from the Mayak facility, starting around 1951. Before that, some waste was put into the Techa River. From about 1956, some waste was also kept in special tanks. This made the lake one of the most polluted places on Earth.

What is Radioactive Waste?

Radioactive waste is material that contains dangerous substances that give off radiation. This radiation can be very harmful to living things, including people, animals, and plants. It comes from nuclear power plants or other places that use nuclear materials. Because it's so dangerous, radioactive waste needs to be stored very carefully for a long time.

Why Was Lake Karachay Used?

The Mayak facility produced a lot of radioactive waste. At first, they dumped it into the Techa River. However, this caused serious health problems for people living along the river. To stop this, they started using Lake Karachay as a new dumping site. The lake was chosen because it didn't have an outlet, meaning the water and waste would stay contained.

The Dangers of the Lake

Lake Karachay became incredibly dangerous due to the high levels of radiation. Just standing near the lake for a short time could expose a person to a deadly amount of radiation. The radiation levels were so high that even a few minutes of exposure could be fatal. Over time, the lake's water level dropped, exposing some of the radioactive mud. This mud could be picked up by the wind and spread dangerous dust over a wide area.

Protecting the Lake

To stop the spread of radiation, efforts were made to cover Lake Karachay. From 1968 to 2015, workers filled the lake with concrete blocks, rocks, and soil. The goal was to completely cover the lake, preventing the radioactive materials from being exposed to the air or spreading into the environment. This project aimed to make the area safer, but the lake remains a highly contaminated site.
