Lake Nona is a large, planned community in Orlando. It covers about 17 square miles (44 square kilometers). This area is located southeast of the Orlando International Airport. It's being built by a company called Lake Nona Property Holdings. The community is named after a big lake found in its northern part.

Growing Population in Lake Nona

Lake Nona has grown a lot over the years! In 2000, only about 1,500 people lived there. By 2015, the population had jumped to over 50,000 people. Many new residents have moved to Lake Nona, helping it become a busy and lively place.

Learning and Medical Hub

Lake Nona is home to a special area called the Medical City. This part of the community focuses on health and learning. It has many important centers for medical research and education.

You can find parts of the University of Central Florida here, like its College of Medicine. The University of Florida also has a College of Pharmacy in Lake Nona. This pharmacy school is one of the top-ranked in the country. Many other medical and educational places are also located in this area.

Exploring Lake Nona's Neighborhoods

The city of Orlando has divided Lake Nona into different neighborhoods. Each one has its own unique features and places to visit:

  • Lake Nona Central: This area includes VillageWalk at Lake Nona. It's also home to the USTA National Campus, which is a huge tennis facility.
  • Lake Nona Estates: Here you'll find the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club. It's a well-known place for golf.
  • Lake Nona South: This neighborhood is where the Medical City is located. It also has Laureate Park, a residential area.
  • Northlake Park at Lake Nona: This part includes two separate developments: Morningside at Lake Nona and Waters Edge at Lake Nona.

There's also a fifth neighborhood called Education Village. This area is just outside the original Lake Nona borders. It's where you'll find Lake Nona High School and the Valencia College Lake Nona Campus.

Future of Air Travel: The Vertiport

An exciting new project is planned for Lake Nona! A German aviation company named Lilium plans to open a special airport called a vertiport here. This will be the first vertiport in the entire USA.

It's expected to be ready by 2025. Lilium is building electric air taxis that can take off and land straight up, like a helicopter. These air taxis will be able to carry six people.
