In 2020, about 1,135 people lived in Lakefield Township. This was a small increase from the 1,061 people who lived there in 2010. The township was officially started in 1877.

Lakefield Township covers a total area of about 71.95 square miles (186.35 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 63.18 square miles (163.63 square kilometers). The rest, about 8.77 square miles (22.71 square kilometers), is water.
Lakes and Waterways
This township is known for its many lakes. It includes the northern part of Manistique Lake and also North Manistique Lake. These two larger lakes are connected by a small stream called Helmer Creek.
Besides these, you can also find several smaller lakes here. These include Crooked Lake, East Lake, Locke Lake, Lost Lake, McCormick Lake, and T Lake.
Roads and Travel
Several important roads help people travel through Lakefield Township:
- Michigan Highway 28 (M-28) goes through a small part of the northeast corner of the township.
- County Road H-33 (also known as County Road 135) starts at M-28 and runs south right through the middle of the township.
- County Road H-44 (also known as 10 Curves Road or County Road 98) begins at H-33 and travels east and west towards M-77.
Local Communities
Lakefield Township has a couple of small communities:
- Helmer is a small, unofficial community located on the northeast shore of Manistique Lake. It is home to the historic Helmer House Inn.
- Carpenter Landing is another small community. It is found on the western shore of North Manistique Lake, southwest of Newberry.
