History of Lakeside
Early Settlers and the Community's Name
Lakeside began to be settled around the year 1890. Some of the very first people to live here were John B. and Caroline Talbot Merrill. John was from Michigan, and Caroline came all the way from Norton, Suffolk, England.
Another important early family was the Nelsons, who were immigrants from Denmark. Their daughters, Lulu and Clara Nelson, were also among the first residents.
The Lakeside post office, which is still there today, was first opened in 1888. The community got its name because it is located near a lake.
