Lakewood is a ghost town in Western Australia. It's located in the Goldfields-Esperance region. You can find it between the towns of Kalgoorlie and Kambalda. A ghost town is a place that used to have many people but is now mostly empty.

What's the Story of Lakewood?

How Did Lakewood Get Its Name?

Lakewood was not always called Lakewood. It was first known as Lakeside. In 1903, a local group called the progress association asked the government to measure out land for homes. They wanted to build a town there.

However, the name Lakeside could not be used. There was already a town called Lakeside in Queensland. The local council, the Kalgoorlie Road Board, thought about naming it Gnumballa.

When the town was officially created in 1904, it was named Ngumballa. This name comes from the Aboriginal language. It is the local name for Hannan Lake, a nearby body of water.

Why Did the Name Change So Many Times?

Even though the town was called Ngumballa, the railway station kept the name Lakeside. By 1909, the town's name was also changed back to Lakeside.

But the name changes were not over! In 1938, another railway station near Wiluna was also named Lakeside. To avoid confusion, the town's name had to change again. This time, it became Lakewood. The town was not officially renamed Lakewood until 1947.

Lakewood's Connection to Timber

In the early 1900s, Lakewood was linked to the timber industry. Special timber railways were used there. These railways helped transport firewood for the gold mines in the area.
