Lakewood Gulch is a natural stream that flows through parts of Lakewood and west Denver, Colorado. It carries water into the South Platte River. This gulch is a special green space that includes several parks. It is also home to a fun, old-fashioned train ride.

What is Lakewood Gulch?

Lakewood Gulch is a stream that starts near Green Mountain in Lakewood. It flows east through different areas. These areas include Sixth Avenue West Park and Red Rocks Community College. The gulch then continues into Denver. Finally, it joins the South Platte River. This happens southwest of where I-25 and Colfax Avenue meet.

A Path Through History

Long ago, an old train track called the Interurban Shortline Railway used to run along the gulch. Today, the gulch is a beautiful greenbelt. A greenbelt is an area of natural land that helps keep a city green. It includes parks like Rude Park, Sanchez Park, and Lakewood Gulch Park.

Fun Activities and Transportation

The gulch is a great place for outdoor fun. In Denver, there is a bike path right next to the creek. This path is perfect for riding bikes or walking. A part of the Platte Valley Trolley also uses the gulch's route. This is a special old-style streetcar that offers fun rides.

The W Line Light Rail

A modern train line also runs along Lakewood Gulch. This is the "W" light rail line. It is part of the RTD system in Denver. The W line opened for passengers on April 25, 2013. It helps people travel easily around the area.

Staying Safe Near the Gulch

Sometimes, heavy rains can cause the gulch to flood quickly. This is called a flash flood. It is important to be careful near the water, especially during storms. For safety, some parts of the bike path next to the creek have been closed. This helps keep everyone safe from fast-moving water.
