Lamar Hunter Smith, born on November 29, 1970, is a former American football player. He was a running back in the National Football League (NFL). Lamar played for several teams from 1994 to 2003. These teams included the Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints, and Carolina Panthers. Before joining the NFL, he played college football for the Houston Cougars. The Seattle Seahawks chose him in the third round of the 1994 NFL draft.
One of Lamar Smith's most famous moments happened on December 30, 2000. While playing for the Miami Dolphins, he carried the ball an amazing 40 times in a wildcard playoff game. This was an NFL record at the time for a playoff game. He gained 209 yards rushing in that game. He also scored a 17-yard touchdown in overtime. This helped the Dolphins win 23–17 against the Indianapolis Colts. This was Miami's most recent playoff win as of the 2023 football season.
Lamar Smith's Early Life and Education
Lamar Smith grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He went to South Side High School there. After high school, he continued his education at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. Later, he received a scholarship to attend the University of Houston. He played college football for the Houston Cougars during his last two years of college.
Lamar Smith's Professional Football Career
Lamar Smith began his professional football journey when he was picked in the 1994 NFL draft. The Seattle Seahawks chose him as the 73rd player overall in the third round. He played for the Seahawks from 1994 to 1997.
After his time with the Seahawks, Lamar played for the New Orleans Saints in 1998 and 1999. He then joined the Miami Dolphins for the 2000 and 2001 seasons. During his time with the Dolphins, he had some of his best performances. He finished his career playing for the Carolina Panthers in 2002 and briefly with the New Orleans Saints again in 2003.
Throughout his NFL career, Lamar Smith gained a total of 4,853 rushing yards. He also scored 38 touchdowns. These numbers show he was a strong and important player for his teams.
