Lambeth Central was an area in South London that elected a person to represent it in the UK Parliament. This area was part of the London Borough of Lambeth.

Each area that elects a representative is called a parliamentary constituency. The person elected is known as a Member of Parliament (MP). They work in the House of Commons to speak for the people in their area. Lambeth Central elected one MP using a system called "first-past-the-post." This means the candidate with the most votes wins.

The Lambeth Central area was mainly around Clapham. It was created for the election in February 1974. It stopped being a separate area for elections in 1983. Most of its land then became part of the Vauxhall constituency.

History of Lambeth Central's MP

This constituency existed for a short time. It is most remembered for a special election held in 1978. This was called a "by-election" because the previous MP had passed away.

During this by-election, a group called the National Front campaigned strongly. Lambeth Central was a very diverse area with people from many different backgrounds. The National Front also put forward a candidate in the next general election. However, in both elections, their candidates did not receive many votes. They even lost their "deposit," which is money candidates pay to stand in an election. If they don't get enough votes, they don't get this money back.

The boundaries of this constituency were the same as the Lambeth Central electoral division. This division was used for electing councillors to the Greater London Council in 1973, 1977, and 1981.
