Lamon Tajuan Brewster (born June 5, 1973) is an American former professional boxer. He competed in boxing from 1996 to 2010. Lamon Brewster was a heavyweight champion. He held the World Boxing Organization (WBO) heavyweight title. This was from 2004 to 2006.

Brewster is famous for a big win. He scored an upset knockout victory over Wladimir Klitschko. This win helped him become the WBO champion. In 2004, he was ranked among the top heavyweights.

As an amateur, he won the U.S. national championships in 1995. He also won a silver medal at the 1995 Pan American Games. Both of these were in the heavyweight division. After retiring from boxing in 2011, Brewster became an entrepreneur. He started his own consulting business.

Amateur Boxing Career

Lamon Brewster had a successful amateur boxing career. He won the 1995 U.S. national amateur championship. This was in the heavyweight division.

  • In 1995, he took second place at the Pan American Games. These games were held in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
  • He beat Moises Rolon from Puerto Rico.
  • He lost to Félix Savón from Cuba.
  • Brewster tried to qualify for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. However, he did not make the team. He lost to Nate Jones and DaVarryl Williamson in the trials.

Professional Boxing Journey

Starting as a Pro (1996–2003)

Lamon Brewster became a professional boxer in 1996. For his first three years, he was undefeated. In 2000, he lost two fights. These were against Clifford Etienne and Charles Shufford.

Becoming WBO Champion (2004–2005)

On April 10, 2004, Brewster fought Wladimir Klitschko. This fight was for the vacant World Boxing Organization heavyweight championship. The title was open because Corrie Sanders had left it.

In the early rounds, Klitschko seemed to be winning. He even knocked Brewster down in the fourth round. But in the fifth round, Brewster landed a powerful left hook. This punch hurt Klitschko badly. The referee stopped the fight. Brewster won by a technical knockout.

For many years, Lamon Brewster was the last boxer to knock out Klitschko. This changed when Anthony Joshua won by TKO in 2017.

Losing the Title and Rematch (2006–2007)

Brewster lost his WBO title on April 1, 2006. He fought Sergei Liakhovich from Belarus. Liakhovich won by a unanimous decision. After the fight, Brewster said he could not see with his left eye. He had a serious eye injury called a detached retina. He needed surgery for it.

Lamon Brewster returned to boxing on July 7, 2007. He had a rematch against Wladimir Klitschko. The fight took place in Köln (Cologne), Germany. Brewster's trainer, Buddy McGirt, stopped the fight after the sixth round. Brewster lost the match.

Later Career and Retirement (2008–2010)

After his second fight with Klitschko, Brewster had a few more matches. He lost to Gbenga Oloukun in 2009. The next year, he was stopped by Robert Helenius.

Lamon Brewster officially retired from boxing on January 9, 2011. He said his eye injury from the fight with Helenius was the reason. He had several surgeries to try and fix his vision. Eventually, his sight began to get better.

Personal Life and Business

Lamon Brewster has been married twice. He married his current wife, Juana, in October 2000. They have two daughters and a son together. Brewster also has an older daughter from a previous relationship. He is also the cousin of former heavyweight champion Chris Byrd.

Life After Boxing: Entrepreneurship

In July 2011, Brewster started his own business. It is called "Fighting Connection Consulting." He helps professional fighters with many things. This includes training, mental preparation, nutrition, and building a good team. He also advises on how to handle publicity.
