Robert Gabriel Helenius (born on January 2, 1984) is a professional boxer from Finland. He is known as "The Nordic Nightmare." Robert has won several important heavyweight boxing titles in Europe. As a young boxer, he won a silver medal at the 2006 European Championships. He has also defeated famous boxers like Lamon Brewster, Samuel Peter, and Siarhei Liakhovich.

Robert's Early Boxing Days

Robert Helenius started boxing training when he was just five years old. His father was his first coach. In the early 2000s, he trained with Tony Halme.

Winning Medals as an Amateur

Robert won a bronze medal in 2000 at the European "cadets" championships. These championships are for boxers under 17 years old. He also earned another bronze medal in 2001 at the Junior European Championships.

In 2006, Robert had a big year. He won a silver medal at the European Amateur Boxing Championships. He was known for winning many of his fights by knockout.

After 2006, Robert boxed in Germany for a team called Hertha BSC. He also fought against MMA fighter Sergei Kharitonov and won.

Robert's Professional Boxing Career

Robert Helenius became a professional boxer in 2008. He started fighting for a German promoter named Wilfried Sauerland. In 2009, Robert won against Scott Gammer and Taras Bidenko.

In January 2010, Robert faced Lamon Brewster, a former world champion. Many people thought this fight was too soon for Robert. But he showed how strong he was and won by a technical knockout in the eighth round.

After this, Robert defeated Gbenga Oloukun in March 2010. He even broke a bone in his hand during the fight! In August 2010, he won the EU heavyweight title. He defended this title in November 2010 against Attila Levin. In the same fight, he also won the WBO Inter-Continental title.

Facing Samuel Peter

Robert then fought another former world champion, Samuel Peter, in April 2011. Peter started the fight very aggressively. But Robert stayed strong and began landing powerful punches. In the ninth round, Robert knocked Peter out.

Victory Over Siarhei Liakhovich

On August 27, 2011, Robert successfully defended his WBO and WBA titles. He won against Siarhei Liakhovich by technical knockout in the ninth round. This was Robert's third knockout win against a former heavyweight champion. It showed he was one of the best heavyweights in the world.

Becoming European Champion

The Derek Chisora Fight

On December 3, 2011, Robert won the European Championship title. He defeated Derek Chisora in a close fight that went all twelve rounds. The judges' decision was debated by many. Robert later said he had injured his right arm early in the fight.

After this injury, Robert took a long break from boxing to heal. He returned in November 2012 and won against Sherman Williams. In March 2013, he won another fight against Michael Sprott.

Robert then had some disagreements with his boxing team. This kept him from fighting for two years. He returned to the ring in March 2015.

Winning the European Title Again

Robert vs. Franz Rill

In December 2015, Robert fought Franz Rill for the vacant European heavyweight title. Robert won the fight by a clear decision after 12 rounds. He knocked Rill down twice during the fight.

Fights from 2016 to 2018

Robert vs. Johann Duhaupas

In January 2016, Robert gave up his European title. He then fought Johann Duhaupas in April. This fight ended with Duhaupas knocking Robert out in the sixth round. This was Robert's first loss in his professional career.

In September 2016, Robert quickly won his next fight against Konstantin Airich. He knocked Airich out in just 49 seconds.

Robert vs. Dillian Whyte

On October 28, 2017, Robert fought Dillian Whyte. Whyte controlled most of the fight and won by a decision after 12 rounds. Robert later said he took the fight on short notice and with little training.

In March 2018, Robert won a fight against Yury Bykhautsou. He later had a rematch with Bykhautsou in August 2018 and won again.

Robert vs. Erkan Teper

On September 29, 2018, Robert fought Erkan Teper. Robert controlled most of the fight and knocked Teper out in the eighth round.

Fights from 2019 to 2021

Robert vs. Gerald Washington

After almost a year away, Robert fought in the United States for the first time in July 2019. He lost this fight to Gerald Washington by knockout in the eighth round.

In November 2019, Robert won against Mateus Roberto Osorio. He knocked Osorio out in the second round with a body punch.

Robert vs. Adam Kownacki

On March 7, 2020, Robert fought Adam Kownacki. Kownacki was expected to win, but Robert surprised everyone. He stopped Kownacki in the fourth round and won the WBA Gold heavyweight title. This win made Robert a top challenger for the world title.

Robert vs. Adam Kownacki II

Robert had a rematch with Adam Kownacki on October 9, 2021. Robert dominated the fight. Kownacki was disqualified in the sixth round for hitting Robert with low blows. The result was later changed to a technical knockout win for Robert.

Robert vs. Deontay Wilder

Robert then faced former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder on October 15, 2022. He lost this fight by knockout in the first round.

Robert vs. Anthony Joshua

On August 12, 2023, Robert fought Anthony Joshua. Robert was a last-minute replacement for another boxer. He lost the fight by knockout in the seventh round.

Boxing Ban

On July 19, 2024, Robert Helenius received a two-year ban from boxing by UK Anti-Doping. This happened after he failed a drug test following his fight with Anthony Joshua. Robert said he did not intentionally take any banned substances. He believed it was from eating contaminated food. The ban means he can fight again starting September 18, 2025.

Robert's Personal Life

Robert Helenius was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He lived there until he was two years old. He has both Finnish and Swedish citizenship. He has even represented Sweden in some boxing matches. Robert is a Swedish-speaking Finn. Today, he lives in Lumparland, a town in Åland, Finland.
