Derek Chisora (born December 29, 1983) is a professional boxer from Zimbabwe and Britain. He has fought for the WBC heavyweight title twice. He has also held important regional titles. These include the British and Commonwealth titles from 2010 to 2011. He also held the European title from 2013 to 2014. As an amateur boxer, he won the ABA super-heavyweight title in 2006. He is known for his exciting fighting style.

Early Life and Boxing Start

Derek Chisora was born in Mbare, a suburb of Harare, Zimbabwe, on December 29, 1983. His parents were Viola and Paul Chisora. When he was four, his parents divorced. Derek spent his early years in Hatfield, Zimbabwe, with his grandmother and step-grandfather. As a teenager, he went to Churchill School. There, he became a paramedic for the school's sports teams. In 1999, when he was 16, Chisora and his family moved to Finchley, London, in the United Kingdom.

Derek started boxing at age 19. He trained at Finchley ABC in North London. This was also the home club of heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. Chisora had 20 amateur fights. He won the 2005 Novice championships. He also won the 2006 ABA super-heavyweight title. He earned a silver medal at the Four Nations Championships.

Professional Boxing Journey

Derek Chisora became a professional boxer in 2007. He was trained by Don Charles. His first professional fight was on February 17, 2007, in London. He won by a technical knockout (TKO) in the second round. He continued to win his early fights. He showed his power by stopping many opponents.

Becoming a Champion

Chisora won the British heavyweight title on May 15, 2010. He defeated Danny Williams by TKO in the second round. This was a big step in his career. Later that year, on September 18, 2010, he defended his British title. He also won the Commonwealth title in a rematch against Sam Sexton. He stopped Sexton in the ninth round.

Big Fights and Challenges

On July 23, 2011, Chisora faced Tyson Fury. Both boxers were undefeated at the time. Fury won the fight by a unanimous decision. This was Chisora's first professional loss. He lost his British and Commonwealth titles.

Chisora then fought Robert Helenius on December 3, 2011. This was for the WBA and WBO Intercontinental and vacant European heavyweight titles. Chisora lost by a split decision. Many people thought Chisora should have won the fight.

Fighting for a World Title

On February 18, 2012, Chisora challenged Vitali Klitschko for the WBC heavyweight title. This was a huge fight for Chisora. Klitschko won the fight by a unanimous decision. Despite the loss, Chisora earned respect for his toughness. He was only the fourth boxer to go the full 12 rounds with Klitschko.

Chisora fought David Haye on July 14, 2012. This was a highly anticipated fight. Haye won by TKO in the fifth round.

Winning the European Title

In March 2013, Chisora got his British boxing license back. He returned to the ring on April 20, 2013. He won against Hector Alfredo Avila. On September 21, 2013, Chisora fought Edmund Gerber for the vacant European heavyweight title. Chisora won by TKO in the fifth round. He became the European champion. He defended his WBO International title against Ondřej Pála on November 30, 2013, winning by TKO.

Rematch with Fury

Chisora and Tyson Fury had a rematch on November 29, 2014. This fight was a final eliminator for the WBO heavyweight title. Fury won the fight when Chisora's corner stopped the bout after the tenth round.

Later Career and More Big Fights

After his second loss to Fury, Chisora won several fights. He then faced Kubrat Pulev on May 7, 2016, for the vacant European heavyweight title. Pulev won by a split decision.

Chisora fought Dillian Whyte on December 10, 2016. It was a very close and exciting fight. Whyte won by a split decision. Chisora later signed with Matchroom Sport. He continued to fight top heavyweights.

On July 28, 2018, Chisora fought Carlos Takam. Chisora won by TKO in the eighth round. This win put him back in the heavyweight title picture.

Second Whyte Fight and Trainer Changes

Chisora had a rematch with Dillian Whyte on December 22, 2018. This was another intense fight. Whyte won by knockout in the eleventh round.

In 2019, Chisora changed trainers. He started working with Dave Coldwell. He won against Senad Gashi and Artur Szpilka. He then fought David Price on October 26, 2019. Chisora won by TKO in the fourth round.

Battles with Top Contenders

On October 31, 2020, Chisora faced Oleksandr Usyk. Usyk was an undefeated former cruiserweight champion. Chisora lost by unanimous decision. He put up a strong fight against the skilled Usyk.

Chisora then fought Joseph Parker twice. The first fight was on May 1, 2021. Parker won by a split decision. Many thought the decision was close. The rematch was on December 18, 2021. Parker won again, this time by unanimous decision.

Recent Fights and Future Plans

On July 9, 2022, Chisora had a rematch with Kubrat Pulev. Chisora won by split decision in a thrilling fight. This was a big win for him.

On December 3, 2022, Chisora fought Tyson Fury for a third time. This was for the WBC heavyweight title. Fury won by TKO in the tenth round.

Chisora returned to the ring on August 12, 2023. He fought Gerald Washington. Chisora won by unanimous decision. He showed he still had the desire to compete.

On July 27, 2024, Chisora faced Joe Joyce. This was a highly anticipated fight between two British heavyweights. Chisora won by unanimous decision after 10 rounds. He even scored a knockdown in the ninth round.

Chisora's 49th professional fight was on February 8, 2025. He fought Otto Wallin in Manchester, England. Chisora won by unanimous decision. He scored two knockdowns in the fight. Chisora has said he wants to reach 50 professional fights before retiring.

Personal Life

Derek Chisora is married and has two daughters. He speaks English and Shona, which is his first language. He is a fan of Manchester United F.C. and is a Christian.
