Malik Scott, born on October 16, 1980, is an American boxing trainer and a former professional boxer. He competed in boxing matches from 2000 to 2016. Scott was known for his skills as a heavyweight boxer. After his fighting career, he became a respected coach.

Malik Scott's Amateur Boxing Career

Malik Scott began boxing when he was 11 years old. He had a very successful amateur career. In 1997, he won the Junior Olympics Championships. He also won the "Under-19" Junior World Championships that same year. In 1998, Scott won the American Boxing Classic title.

In 1999, he became the National AAU Heavyweight Championship winner. During this time, he defeated strong boxers like Michael Bennett and Jason Estrada. In 2000, he won against DaVarryl Williamson and Malcolm Tann. However, he did not qualify for the Olympics that year. His amateur record was impressive, with 70 wins and only 3 losses.

Malik Scott's Professional Boxing Journey

Malik Scott started his professional boxing career in 2000. He had a strong start, with only three losses throughout his career. Early on, he defeated former amateur star Terry McGroom. He also won against experienced boxers like David Bostice and Louis Monaco. In 2007, he took a big step up and beat former contender Charles Shufford.

Returning to the Boxing Ring

Scott took a break from boxing between December 2008 and early 2012. This was because of a bicep injury. After recovering, he made a comeback in 2012. He trained with Hall of Fame coach Jesse Reid until 2014. Then, Scott reunited with his old amateur coach, Fred Jenkins.

His first fight back was on February 18, 2012, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He faced journeyman heavyweight Kendrick Releford. Scott had fought Releford before in 2006. Just like their first match, Scott won this fight by a unanimous decision.

Scott's next fight in 2012 was on June 23 in Studio City, California. He fought Alvaro Morales, another heavyweight boxer. Scott won this match by a unanimous decision as well. Later that year, on September 8, 2012, Scott fought Bowie Tupou in Oakland, California. Scott won this fight by an 8-round TKO (Technical Knockout).

Key Fights from 2013 to 2016

Scott vs. Glazkov Match

On January 10, 2013, it was announced that Scott would fight Vyacheslav Glazkov. Glazkov was an unbeaten heavyweight contender at the time. Their fight took place on February 23, 2013. The match ended in a draw, which was the first time Scott's record wasn't a win.

Scott vs. Chisora Match

On July 20, 2013, Scott fought Derek Chisora for a boxing title. The fight happened at the Wembley Arena in London, England. In this match, Scott suffered his first professional defeat. He was knocked out in the sixth round.

Scott vs. Wilder Match

On January 24, 2014, Scott defeated Grover Young by a stoppage in the second round. However, on March 15, 2014, he was knocked out in the first round by Deontay Wilder.

Scott vs. Leapai Match

In his next fight, Scott faced Alex Leapai. Scott won this match by a unanimous decision. The judges scored the fight clearly in his favor.

Scott vs. Thompson Match

On October 30, 2015, Scott fought against the experienced boxer Tony Thompson. This fight was scheduled for ten rounds. Scott won the match by a unanimous decision, even though he was knocked down in the ninth round.

Scott vs. Ortiz Match

On November 12, 2016, Malik Scott fought Cuban boxer Luis Ortiz in Monaco. Scott was on the defensive for most of the fight. Ortiz won the match by a clear decision from the judges. This was Scott's last professional fight.

Malik Scott's Life After Boxing

After retiring from professional boxing, Malik Scott became a boxing coach. In 2021, he became the head coach for Deontay Wilder. Their first fight together was Wilder's match against Tyson Fury. Scott had previously sparred with Fury, where Scott's eardrum was injured.

In 2023, Scott also became the new head coach for Gerald Washington. Their first fight together was Washington's loss against Derek Chisora. Scott had previously fought Chisora during his own boxing career.

In 2024, Scott joined the coaching team for Gilberto Ramírez as an assistant coach.

Malik Scott's Personal Life

In December 2023, it was shared that Malik Scott was in a relationship with British sports broadcaster Kate Abdo. They had been seen training together earlier in September 2023. In March 2024, they officially shared their relationship on social media. They got married in September 2024.
