History of Shelton
Shelton became an official city in 1890. It was named after David Shelton. He was a leader in the area's government. Before this, the land was called "Cota." The Squaxin Island Tribe lived there for many centuries. They were known as the "People of the Waters."
The land was given up by the tribe on December 26, 1854. This happened with the Treaty of Medicine Creek. David Shelton and his wife, Frances, then claimed 640 acres of land. This was allowed by the Donation Land Claim Act. This land later became the city of Shelton.
Long ago, small steamboats served Shelton. They were part of the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet. These boats included the Old Settler and City of Shelton. The city's economy was based on logging, farming, and raising animals. Growing oysters was also important.
The Simpson Timber Company had a large mill in downtown Shelton. It was on Puget Sound's Oakland Bay. This mill was sold in 2015 to Sierra Pacific Industries. They are now building a new mill. Shelton is also called "Christmastown, USA." This is because many Christmas trees are grown in the area. This name was brought back for a yearly festival.
The Ridge Motorsports Park opened in 2012. It has hosted exciting races. These include MotoAmerica and Trans-Am Series events.
