Lamont Strothers: A Basketball Journey
Lamont Strothers was born in Nansemond County, Virginia. He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Hampton University in 2023.
Early Life and College Basketball
Strothers was a talented shooter for the Forest Glen high school team in Suffolk, Virginia. In 1986, during his senior year, his left eye vision was affected after an incident. Because of his vision, he could not join the military. He then worked at a meatpacking plant and played in local basketball leagues.
He turned down a scholarship offer from Georgia because he couldn't afford the remaining tuition. While playing in a recreational league, an assistant coach from Christopher Newport University saw him play. This coach, Roland Ross, offered Strothers a spot on the team.
Lamont Strothers played four years at Christopher Newport University, from 1987 to 1991. He scored a total of 2,709 points, averaging 23.3 points per game. In 1991, he led his team to a 21–4 record and won the Dixie Conference championship. For his excellent performance, he was named first-team All-American and Division III Player of the Year by Basketball Times. Strothers finished his college career as the third-highest scorer in Division III history.
Playing Professionally
In the 1991 NBA draft, the Golden State Warriors picked Lamont Strothers in the second round. He was the 43rd player chosen overall. This made him the highest-ever draft pick for a player from NCAA Division III. He was then traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.
He played for parts of two seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Dallas Mavericks. In total, he played 13 NBA games, averaging 4.6 points per game.
Strothers played most of his professional career overseas. He was very successful in the Philippines as an "import" player for the San Miguel Beermen. He played for them from 1996 to 2002. In 1999, he was named the Best Import in the PBA Governors Cup. He also led his team to a championship that year. He again led his team to win the 2000 Governor's Cup title, even though they were the sixth-seeded team. Strothers ended his PBA career with over 3,900 points.
