Lanaja's Culture and Way of Life
A book called "Lanaja, life in a Monegran village before irrigation" shares many details about the culture of Lanaja. It was written by Ramón Lasaosa Susín. The book tells us how people lived and worked in the town. It covers the time up to the early 1900s.
A Look at Lanaja's History
In the 1800s, Lanaja faced attacks from groups of bandits. These bandits hid in the nearby Sierra de Alcubierre mountains. A famous bandit named Mariano Gavín Suñén, also known as "Cucaracha," died here on February 28, 1875. He was shot by the police after being poisoned.
In July 1936, a military uprising began in Spain. Lanaja was able to defend itself from an early attack. Later that month, a group called the Arquer-Piquer column took control of the town. They found five people who had been killed before they arrived.
During this time, Lanaja was bombed heavily by planes. This caused many deaths among the people living there. Some people left the town and moved to Catalonia to find safety. When the rebel troops took over Lanaja, there was a period of harsh control. This led to many deaths and continued for decades, creating a feeling of fear.
