Lanesboro had its start in the year 1901 by the building of the Mason City and Fort Dodge Railroad through that territory. It was named for Julius Lane, an early settler.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.75 square miles (1.94 km2), of which, 0.74 square miles (1.92 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.

As of the census of 2010, there were 121 people, 62 households, and 33 families residing in the city. The population density was 163.5 inhabitants per square mile (63.1/km2). There were 74 housing units at an average density of 100.0 per square mile (38.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.9% White, 0.8% African American, 0.8% Asian, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 62 households of which 17.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% were married couples living together, 4.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.8% were non-families. 37.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.95 and the average family size was 2.61.
The median age in the city was 50.8 years. 15.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 15.8% were from 25 to 44; 43% were from 45 to 64; and 18.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 52.9% male and 47.1% female.
