History of Lanoka Harbor
Lanoka Harbor and a nearby place called Murray Grove were started in the mid-1700s. These towns are good examples of typical "bay towns" or "Barnegat Bay resorts."
Early Life and Industries
Before railroads brought tourists, people in these bay communities made a living from the forest and the sea. They had a big business harvesting oysters.
The Name "Lanoka Harbor"
The name Lanoka Harbor comes from the many oak trees that grew along George Lane. The original name was "Lanes Oaks," which was later shortened to "Lanoka." In 1924, a man named Samuel Rogers added "Harbor" to the name. He hoped this would help attract more tourists to the shore community.
Murray Grove's Special History
Murray Grove is famous as the "birthplace of Universalism in America." This is where the first Universalist sermon in the United States was preached. The Universalist and Unitarian Retreat and Conference Center was set up there in the early 1800s.
