The Lansdowne Christian Church (also called Hull Memorial) was built in 1903. It is located in Lansdowne, Maryland, near the city of Baltimore. This church is part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) group.
The first pastor was Rev. J. B. DeHoff. Today, Rev. Trent Owings leads the church. They hold services every Sunday morning. The church also has special services for holidays.
The Lansdowne Christian Church helps its local community. They work with other churches in areas like Halethorpe and Arbutus. Since 2004, they have hosted monthly summer concerts. These concerts feature performers from nearby cities and counties.
A Look at Church History
The land and building for the church were a gift. They were donated by Charles Wesley Hull and his wife, Mary A. Hull. Charles Hull was a veteran of the American Civil War (1861-1865). He wanted to honor the soldiers who fought for the Union.
The Hull family also helped the community in other ways. They gave land to start Lansdowne's first volunteer fire company in 1902. Charles W. Hull was a leader in a group called the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.). This group was for Civil War veterans.
A Special Historic Building
The church building is made of wood and has two bell towers. In 1977, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historical sites in the United States. The National Park Service keeps this list.
In 2004, the church became part of "Maryland's Civil War Trail." This trail helps people learn about Civil War sites in Maryland. You can find plaques and information at these locations.
This church is very unique. It is the only church in the United States dedicated to the Grand Army of the Republic. The G.A.R. was a huge group of Civil War veterans. Every year in May, a special service is held to remember these veterans. Today, their descendants, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, continue this tradition.
In 1905, two years after the church was built, three beautiful stained glass windows were added. The Grand Army of the Republic and their women's group, the Woman's Relief Corps, gave these windows. They are still there today.
