A Look Back in Time: Lantarón's History
Lantarón as a Medieval Fortress
Long, long ago, during the Middle Ages (which was a time from about the 5th to the 15th century), Lantarón was a very important place. It had a strong fortress built on the eastern edge of the Kingdom of León. A kingdom was a country ruled by a king or queen.
Important Leaders of the Fortress
For many years, during the 800s and 900s, different leaders called "counts" were in charge of the Lantarón fortress. A count was a powerful noble who governed a region for the king. These counts often also controlled the fortress in a nearby place called Cerezo de Río Tirón. Some of these important counts included:
- Gonzalo Téllez (around 897)
- Munio Vélaz (around 919)
- Fernando Díaz (around 923)
- Álvaro Herraméliz (around 929)
These leaders played a key role in protecting the borders of the Kingdom of León during those times.
