Lanuza is a small, charming village located in the Pyrenees mountains of Spain. It's part of the Sallent de Gállego area in the province of Huesca, which is in the Aragon region. Lanuza sits on the left side of the Gállego river. This village has a very interesting history because its residents had to leave their homes many years ago, but they eventually came back!

Lanuza's Unique Story

A Village in the Pyrenees

Lanuza is nestled in the beautiful Pyrenees mountains. It's a typical mountain village, surrounded by nature. The Gállego river flows nearby, adding to the scenic views. For many years, people lived simple lives in Lanuza, enjoying the peace of the mountains.

The Reservoir Project

In 1978, something big happened that changed Lanuza. The government planned to build a large water reservoir. This project was meant to create a big lake by flooding the area. People in Lanuza were told they had to leave their homes because the village was expected to be completely covered by water. So, everyone moved away. Lanuza even lost its official status as a separate town and became part of Sallent de Gállego.

However, the predictions were not entirely correct. When the reservoir was finished, only some parts of Lanuza ended up underwater. Many buildings, including the main part of the village, were still standing!

Coming Home: Repopulation

After many years, the former residents of Lanuza missed their village. In the 1990s, they started a big effort to return and rebuild Lanuza. They worked hard to fix up the old houses and bring life back to the village. Thanks to their dedication, Lanuza is now a lively place again. People have moved back, and the village is growing.

Lanuza Today: A Tourist Spot

Today, Lanuza is a popular place for visitors. Tourists come all year round, especially in the summer, to enjoy its beauty. They love the mountain views, the quiet atmosphere, and the unique story of a village that came back to life. It's a great example of how a community can work together to save their home.
