Where the River Starts and Flows
The Gállego River starts high up in the Pyrenees mountains. Its source is at about 2,200 meters (7,200 feet) above sea level. This spot is near a mountain pass called Col d'Aneu and not far from Col du Pourtalet.
From its source, the river flows through the beautiful Tena Valley. It passes through towns like Sallent de Gállego, Panticosa, and Biescas. After Sabiñánigo, the river makes a big bend. It then continues flowing from north to south. Finally, it joins the Ebro River near the city of Zaragoza.
Other Rivers Joining In
Many smaller rivers and streams flow into the Gállego River. In its upper part, some of the main ones are the Aguas Limpias, Caldarés, Escarra, Lana Mayor, and Aurín. Further downstream, in the middle and lower parts of the river, other important tributaries include the Guarga, Seco, Asabón, and Sotón.
How People Use the River
The water from the Gállego River is used a lot by people. Its flow is carefully controlled and diverted along its path. This means that when the Gállego River reaches the Ebro River, it carries only about 10 percent of the water it would naturally have. People use this water for farming, drinking, and other activities.
The Gállego River is so important that it gives its name to a region in Aragon called Alto Gállego.
