History of Lares
Puerto Rico used to be a territory of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This transfer happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
After this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a U.S. territory but not a state. In 1899, the United States government counted the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,954 people lived in Lares barrio at that time.
Over the years, the population of Lares barrio has changed:
- In 1980, there were 3,351 people.
- In 1990, the population grew to 3,458.
- By 2000, it reached 3,807 people.
- In the most recent census in 2010, the population was 3,405.
