The Larkin Covered Bridge is a special old bridge in northern Tunbridge, Vermont. It carries Larkin Road over the First Branch White River. This bridge was built in 1902. It is one of the last covered bridges built in Vermont during that time. It is also one of five covered bridges found in the town of Tunbridge. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Discovering the Larkin Covered Bridge

The Larkin Covered Bridge is located just north of North Tunbridge village. You can find it on Larkin Road, not far from Vermont Route 110. This bridge is a single-span structure. It uses a special design called a "multiple kingpost truss." This design uses many strong wooden triangles to support the bridge.

What Does It Look Like?

The bridge is about 68 feet (21 m) long. It is also about 16 feet (4.9 m) wide. This means it has enough space for one lane of traffic. The bridge rests on strong supports made of stone and concrete. It has a metal roof to protect the wooden parts from weather.

The sides of the bridge are covered with vertical wooden boards. These boards help keep the inside of the bridge safe. The openings at each end of the bridge are called "portals." These portals are also covered with vertical wooden boards. Even though the main support beams are straight, the portals are slightly angled. This gives the bridge a unique, slightly slanted look from the outside.

A Glimpse into History

The Larkin Covered Bridge was built in 1902. It is one of only two bridges from the early 1900s still standing in Vermont. The other one is the Kingsbury Covered Bridge in nearby Randolph, built in 1904.

Tunbridge is famous for its covered bridges. The Larkin Bridge is one of five in Tunbridge. When you add another bridge in nearby Chelsea, it creates a large group of covered bridges. They all cross the same waterway. This makes the area a great place to see these historic structures.
