A Look at Larksville's Past
Larksville was officially created on November 10, 1909. It was formed from a part of Plymouth Township. Before it became Larksville, the community was known as Blindtown. The name was changed to Larksville to honor Peggy Lark, who used to live there.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Larksville became famous for its anthracite coal mining. Many European immigrants came to work in the mines. Larksville was a busy mining town. Houses were built close to the coal mines, which were called collieries. Some of the collieries in Larksville were Boston, Loree, Lance, Woodward, and Number 4.
At its busiest time in 1920, Larksville had over 9,000 people living there. However, the coal mining industry in the area started to decline after the Knox Mine Disaster in 1959. Because of this, the number of people living in Larksville slowly went down. Today, the population is just over 4,000.
