Playing Career Highlights

Lars Ricken was born in Dortmund, Germany. He joined his local club, Borussia Dortmund, when he was very young. He made his first team debut in the Bundesliga on 8 March 1994. He was not yet 18 years old at the time. From the next season, he became a regular player for the team.
Famous Champions League Goal
One of Ricken's most memorable moments was in the 1997 UEFA Champions League final against Juventus FC. He came on as a substitute and scored a fantastic long-distance goal. He scored just 16 seconds after entering the game! This goal helped Borussia Dortmund win the Champions League title. He also helped his team win two Bundesliga titles in a row, scoring 8 goals in 47 matches during those seasons (1994–1996).
Playing for Germany
After his success with Dortmund, Lars Ricken was called up to play for the Germany national football team. He earned his first cap (played his first game) for Germany on 10 September 1997.
He faced some challenges with injuries after this. However, he regained his form and helped Dortmund win another league title in 2002. He scored six goals that season, which was his best goal-scoring year. Because of his good performance, he was chosen to be part of Germany's squad for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Germany finished as runners-up in that tournament.
Later Years and Retirement
After the 2002 World Cup, Ricken's injury problems returned. This made it difficult for him to play consistently at the highest level. In April 2007, he was moved to the reserve team, Borussia Dortmund II.
In November 2007, Lars Ricken announced that he was retiring from football. He tried to make a comeback briefly in 2008 with a team in the United States, but he soon returned to Germany and Borussia Dortmund.
Life After Playing
After retiring as a player, Lars Ricken continued his career at Borussia Dortmund.
Youth Coordinator Role
On 11 June 2008, Borussia Dortmund announced that Ricken would become the club's youth coordinator. In this role, he helped develop young players for the club. He continued to play for the amateur side of Borussia Dortmund for a short time. He officially retired from all professional football on 16 February 2009.
