Las Manchas is a small place on the island of La Palma. It is part of two municipalities: El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane. This area is special because it is in a volcanic region. This makes it a popular spot for tourists and for learning about local culture. A long time ago, in the late 1400s, this area was home to native groups called Tihuya and Tamanca.

Geography of Las Manchas
Las Manchas is located in the southwest part of La Palma. It sits between the towns of El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane. It is a small area. It shares borders with the neighborhoods of Tajuya, Todoque, and Tacande. To the south, it borders the municipality of Fuencaliente de La Palma.
History of Las Manchas
In the 1600s, the Massieu family owned large farms in Las Manchas. Nicolás Massieu y Vandala also built the San Nicolás church here. Since 1837, when El Paso separated from Los Llanos de Aridane, Las Manchas has been part of both towns. The main road, LP-2, marks the border between them. The area west of the road is called Las Manchas de Abajo. The area above the road is known as San Nicolás de las Manchas.
Volcanic Eruptions
Las Manchas has been affected by volcanoes. In 1949, lava from the San Juan volcano covered parts of Las Manchas. This included the area of San Nicolás.
More recently, on September 19, 2021, a volcanic eruption started nearby. It happened near a place called Cabeza de Vaca. The eruption began with two cracks in the ground and eight openings. It caused a lot of damage. Many buildings and facilities close to the eruption area were destroyed.
