About Las Toninas
History and Name
Las Toninas was founded in 1960. Its name comes from the tonina, which is what people in Argentina call the Commerson's dolphin. These playful dolphins are often seen near the coast.
Long ago, in 1883, a ship from the British Empire crashed near the shore. The ship's captain decided to stay and live there. He started a large farm called Estancia Los Ingleses.
The Giant Maze
One special thing about Las Toninas is its amazing hedge maze. This maze is made from many tamarix bushes. These bushes grow very well along the coast.
The maze covers a huge area, about 6,400 square meters (that's like 16 basketball courts!). People say it's the biggest maze in Argentina. It's a fun challenge for visitors to try and find their way out!
Connecting the World: Fiber Optics
Las Toninas is also known as the "Fiber Optical Capital" of Argentina. This is because it's the main spot where special underwater cables come ashore. These cables are made of optical fiber. They carry internet and phone signals from other countries to Argentina.
Several big companies, like Level 3, TIWS, Telecom-Antel, and Telefónica, have their cable stations here. The town was chosen for these important cables because its coastline is smooth and not very rocky. This makes it easier and safer for the cables to land.
