Las Ánimas is a volcano located in the Andes mountains of Colombia. It stands tall at 4,175 metres (13,698 ft) (about 13,697 feet) high. This impressive volcano is found right on the border between the Cauca and Nariño regions.
Las Ánimas is part of a larger group of volcanoes called the Doña Juana Volcanic Complex. It is close to another volcano named Petacas. Scientists have found evidence of volcanic activity from Las Ánimas in a nearby town called San Pablo. The last time this volcano erupted was so long ago that it's considered prehistoric, meaning before written history began.

Las Ánimas is an important part of the Central Ranges of the Colombian Andes. These mountains are a major part of the Andes mountain range, which stretches across South America.
How Volcanoes Form: Fault Lines Near Las Ánimas
Volcanoes often form near fault lines, which are cracks in the Earth's crust. Las Ánimas and its neighboring volcanoes are located between two important fault lines:
- The El Tablón Fault to the west.
- The San Jerónimo Fault to the east.
These fault lines show where large pieces of the Earth's crust, called tectonic plates, meet and move. This movement can cause earthquakes and create pathways for magma (molten rock) to rise, forming volcanoes.
When Did Las Ánimas Form?
Las Ánimas is an ancient volcano. It formed during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs. These are periods in Earth's history that happened millions of years ago. This means the volcano has been around for a very long time, shaping the landscape of this part of Colombia.
