Latham is a small town in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It is named after Latham Rock, a large granite rock close to the town. This rock was named for an early farmer who used to bring his animals through the area. He made a watering spot for his livestock.
The Story of Latham
How Latham Began
In 1913, people were planning to build a railway line. This line would go from Wongan Hills to Mullewa. The Public Works department decided that the Latham area would be a good spot for a railway station and a town. The railway started running in 1915. The town was officially recognized, or gazetted, in 1917.
Farming in Latham
Farming is very important around Latham. Farmers in the area grow wheat and other cereal crops. In November 1936, a large storage building for wheat was opened. Today, Latham is a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling (CBH). This means farmers bring their harvested grain here to be stored and sent out.
