Latrell Mitchell (born 16 June 1997) is a professional rugby league player from Australia. He plays as a fullback for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the National Rugby League (NRL). He has also played for New South Wales in the State of Origin series and for Australia internationally.
Mitchell started his NRL journey with the Sydney Roosters. He was part of the teams that won the championships in 2018 and 2019 NRL Grand Final. He has also represented the Indigenous All Stars team. Early in his career, he played as a winger and sometimes as a five-eighth.

About Latrell Mitchell
Latrell Mitchell was born in Taree, Australia. His family has Indigenous Australian heritage from the Biripi and Wiradjuri people. He went to Chatham High School. As a young player, he played junior rugby league for the Taree Red Rovers. He also played for the Taree City club in the Group 3 Rugby League under-18s.

Starting Out in Rugby League
2013 and 2014 Seasons
In 2013, Mitchell played for the New South Wales under-16s team. The next year, in 2014, he played for the under-18s team. He was part of the Roosters' S. G. Ball Cup team in 2014. He was named the S. G. Ball Player of the Year. He also won the man-of-the-match award in the S. G. Ball Grand Final.
In November 2014, Mitchell was chosen for the Australian Schoolboys team. They went on a tour to England and France. He scored thirteen tries in seven games. He was named the best player of the series.
2015 Season
Mitchell played for the Roosters' NYC team in 2015. On 16 June 2015, he signed a new contract with the club. This contract kept him with the Roosters until the end of the 2019 season. On 8 July 2015, Mitchell played as a fullback for the New South Wales under-20s team. He scored a try in their 32–16 win at Lang Park. On 14 September 2015, Mitchell was named to the 2015 NYC Team of the Year.
Playing for the Sydney Roosters
2016 Season
Mitchell was part of the Roosters' 2016 NRL Auckland Nines team. He scored four tries in three games during this tournament.
He also played in the Roosters' 2016 World Club Series win against St Helens.
In Round 1 of the 2016 NRL season, Mitchell made his first NRL appearance for the Roosters. This game was against the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He played in every game that season. He finished with fourteen tries, making him the team's top try and point scorer.
2017 Season
In February, Mitchell played in the 2017 All Stars match. He came off the bench as an interchange player.
In the first round of the NRL season, Mitchell scored three tries. This helped the Roosters win 32–18 against the Gold Coast Titans. He scored the winning try in the first week of the 2017 finals against the Broncos. In a later final game against North Queensland, Mitchell had a tough night. The Sydney Roosters lost the match 29–16.
2018 Season
Mitchell was chosen to play for New South Wales in The 2018 State of Origin series. He scored a try in the first game of the series. Mitchell played in all three games. New South Wales won their first Origin shield since 2014.
In the NRL 2018 finals, Mitchell missed one game. This was after a tackle he made on Josh Dugan. He missed the preliminary final win against Souths. On 30 September, Mitchell played in the 2018 NRL Grand Final against the Melbourne Storm. He scored a try and kicked four goals. The Sydney Roosters won 21–6.
At the National Dreamtime Awards 2018, Mitchell was named Male Sportsperson of the Year.
2019 Season
In February, Mitchell played as a centre in the 2019 All Stars match. He kicked three goals in that game.
In round 6 of the 2019 NRL season, Mitchell scored a try and kicked the winning field goal. The Sydney Roosters beat Melbourne 21–20 in extra time. In round 8, Mitchell scored three tries and kicked seven goals. The Sydney Roosters defeated Wests Tigers 42–12.


In Game 1 of the 2019 State of Origin series, Mitchell was sent off the field temporarily for a rule break. He was not chosen for the next games.
In round 14, Mitchell scored two tries and kicked five goals against the Bulldogs. The Roosters won 38–12. In round 18 against Newcastle, Mitchell scored a try and kicked eight goals. The Sydney Roosters won 48–10. In round 20 against the Gold Coast, Mitchell scored two tries and kicked nine goals. The Sydney Roosters won 58–6. In round 22 against the New Zealand Warriors, Mitchell scored two tries and kicked five goals. The Sydney Roosters won 42–6.
On 2 October, Mitchell was named the Dally M centre of the year. This was at the Dally M Awards ceremony. Mitchell played at centre in the club's 2019 NRL Grand Final victory. This was against the Canberra Raiders.
On 25 October, Mitchell kicked four goals for Australia. This was in their 26–4 win over New Zealand in the Oceania Cup.
Playing for the South Sydney Rabbitohs
2020 Season
In January, Mitchell moved from the Sydney Roosters to the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He signed a one-year deal.
In February, Mitchell played as a fullback in the 2020 All Stars match.
Mitchell played his first game for South Sydney in round 1 of the 2020 NRL season. In round 5, Mitchell scored his first try for South Sydney. They defeated the Gold Coast Titans 32–12. In round 15, Mitchell scored two tries and kicked one goal. South Sydney won 56–16 against Manly-Warringah. In round 16, Mitchell had a hamstring injury. He was ruled out for the rest of the season.
2021 Season
In January, Mitchell signed a two-year contract extension with South Sydney. This deal kept him with the club until the end of 2023.
In February, Mitchell played as a fullback in the 2021 All Stars match. He kicked two goals.
In round 5 of the 2021 NRL season, Mitchell scored two tries and kicked a field goal. South Sydney won 35–6 against Brisbane. On 20 April, Mitchell missed several games due to actions on the field. He also received a fine and was not eligible for a 2021 Dally M Medal.
Mitchell played for New South Wales in all three games of the 2021 State of Origin series. He scored two tries and kicked one goal in Game 1.
In round 20, Mitchell scored two tries for South Sydney. They won 50–14 against the St. George Illawarra Dragons. In round 24, Mitchell scored two tries for South Sydney. They won 54–12 against the Sydney Roosters. However, his season ended when he was sent off the field temporarily for a strong tackle that injured an opposing player. Mitchell missed playing in the 2021 finals series and the 2021 NRL Grand Final.
On 1 September 2021, NSW State of Origin coach Brad Fittler said Mitchell needed to stay out of trouble. Two months later, Mitchell won the True Blue Award. This award is for a player who shows good team qualities.
2022 Season
Mitchell missed early games in 2022 due to a previous suspension. This meant he could not play in the Indigenous All-Stars game or round 1 of the 2022 NRL season. In round 2, Melbourne beat South Sydney 15–14. Mitchell kicked a two-point field goal in the last minute. This sent the game into extra time. In round 3, Mitchell kicked four goals and scored one try. South Sydney won 28–16 against the Sydney Roosters. In round 4, Penrith beat South Sydney 26–12. Mitchell kicked two goals.
Before round 5, South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou said Mitchell was dealing with a knee injury. In round 5, Mitchell played only for the first fifteen minutes. He scored a try for Souths against the St. George Illawarra Dragons. He then had a hamstring injury and left the field. Mitchell was expected to be out for eight weeks.
In round 16, Mitchell returned from injury. He kicked five goals for South Sydney in a 30–12 win over the Parramatta Eels. In round 17, Mitchell was captain. He kicked six goals for South Sydney in their 40–28 win over the Newcastle Knights. He was noted for a high tackle on Newcastle winger Dominic Young. In round 20, Cronulla beat South Sydney 21–20. Mitchell missed three field goal attempts in extra time.
Before round 25, Mitchell went to his farm to rest before the finals. In round 25, he kicked two goals for South Sydney. They lost 26–16 to the Sydney Roosters. Mitchell was sent off the field temporarily for slowing down the game.
The next week, Mitchell kicked five goals and scored one try. South Sydney won 30–14 against Sydney Roosters in an elimination final. Then, in semi final 2, Mitchell kicked seven goals for South Sydney. They won 38–12 against Cronulla. On 24 September, Mitchell kicked two goals for South Sydney. They lost 32–12 to Penrith in a preliminary final.
In October, he was named in the Australia team for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.
2023 Season
On 5 February 2023, Mitchell was involved in an incident with his cousin Jack Wighton. Mitchell later apologized for the situation.
In round 6 against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Mitchell played his 150th first grade game. He scored three tries and kicked seven goals. South Sydney won 50–16. After round 12, Mitchell had a calf injury during training. He did not play again until round 22. In August, Mitchell became a brand ambassador for BLUETTI. A few days before round 25, he was filmed at a concert. In round 25, Mitchell was sent off the field temporarily for a tackle on Tyson Frizell. Mitchell later said this action was not good for the game. He missed South Sydney's last game of the season due to this.
2024 Season
In round 3 of the 2024 NRL season, Mitchell scored his 100th NRL try. This was in a 6–48 loss to the Sydney Roosters. After the game, he used strong language in an interview. NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo spoke with Mitchell about being respectful when speaking publicly. No punishment was given.
After South Sydney's 20–16 win in round 4, Mitchell received a fine for a tackle. This tackle caused Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs winger Josh Addo-Carr to fall.
In round 5 against the New Zealand Warriors, Mitchell was noted for two tackles. The first was a tackle with a raised elbow on Shaun Johnson. Mitchell accepted a plea and was suspended for three games. South Sydney officials asked Mitchell to stay in Sydney during his suspension.
In round 12 (NRL Indigenous Round), Mitchell was captain for South Sydney. He was sent off the field temporarily for a tackle on Parramatta Eels centre Sean Russell. Mitchell avoided a suspension by accepting a plea and was fined $3,000. In round 15 against the Brisbane Broncos, Mitchell was sent off the field temporarily for being involved in a scuffle. He was fined $3,000 for his actions.
In Game 2 of the 2024 State of Origin series, Mitchell played as a centre. He scored a try for New South Wales in their 38–18 win over Queensland. After the match, Mitchell was fined for a tackle on Xavier Coates. The following week, Mitchell injured his foot. Before round 24, South Sydney gave him time off for the rest of the season.
2025 Season
Mitchell's one-game NRL suspension from late 2024 was to be used in round 1 of the 2025 NRL season. However, in January 2025, the NRL said Mitchell could use the All Stars match towards his suspension. This meant he could play in round 1. Mitchell had a hamstring injury during training before the 2025 NRL Pre-season Challenge.
He returned to play in round 5. South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett had him play as a centre. In the next two rounds, Mitchell played as a five-eighth. For round 8 against the Melbourne Storm, he was named as a fullback. In the game, Mitchell was sent off the field temporarily for a high tackle on Sualauvi Fa'alogo. He was suspended for one game.

Latrell's Family Life
Mitchell's birth name was Goolagong. His parents are Trish Goolagong and Matt Mitchell. His great-aunt is the famous tennis player Evonne Goolagong Cawley. When Latrell was a teenager, he and his two brothers, Shaquai and Lionel, changed their last name to their father's. Shaquai also plays for the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Latrell Mitchell and his partner, Brielle Mercy, have two children.
Before Game 1 of the 2019 State of Origin series, Mitchell said he would not sing the Australian National Anthem. He felt it did not represent Aboriginal Australians.
On 27 April 2020, Mitchell was fined by the NRL. This was because he broke rules about staying home during the COVID-19 pandemic. He went on a camping trip with another NRL player, Josh Addo-Carr. On 28 April, Mitchell was fined more by the NRL for breaking rules and causing harm to the game's reputation. On 9 November, Mitchell was given a conditional release order. This was after he admitted to giving a firearm to someone without a license.
In August 2021, after Mitchell was suspended from the NRL, his uncle Maurice Goolagong said Mitchell was having a hard time. South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett confirmed Mitchell was doing well. He was still with the team and helping with training.
