Latrell Mitchell (born 16 June 1997) is an Australian professional rugby league player. He plays as a fullback for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the National Rugby League (NRL). Latrell has also played for New South Wales in the State of Origin series. He has also represented Australia at an international level.

Latrell started his NRL career with the Sydney Roosters. He helped them win championships in 2018 and 2019. He has also played for the Indigenous All Stars team.

Latrell Mitchell was born in Taree, a town in New South Wales, Australia. He is from an Indigenous Australian background. His family belongs to the Biripi and Wiradjuri people.

He went to Chatham High School. Latrell started playing junior rugby league for the Taree Red Rovers. He also played for the Taree City club in the Group 3 Rugby League.

Early Playing Years

2013 and 2014 Seasons

In 2013, Latrell played for the New South Wales under-16s team. The next year, he played for the under-18s team. He also played for the Roosters' S. G. Ball Cup team in 2014.

Latrell was named the S. G. Ball Player of the Year. He was also the best player in the S. G. Ball Grand Final. In November 2014, Latrell was chosen for the Australian Schoolboys team. He toured England and France with them. He scored thirteen tries in seven games and was named the best player of the tour.

2015 Season

Latrell played for the Roosters' NYC team in 2015. On his birthday, 16 June 2015, he signed a new contract with the club. He played fullback for the New South Wales under-20s team. He scored a try in their 32–16 win. Latrell was also named to the 2015 NYC Team of the Year.

Playing for the Sydney Roosters

2016 Season

Latrell was part of the Roosters' 2016 NRL Auckland Nines team. He scored four tries in three games during this tournament. He also played in the Roosters' 2016 World Club Series win against St Helens.

In Round 1 of the 2016 NRL season, Latrell made his first NRL appearance. He played for the Roosters against the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He played in every game that season. He finished as the team's top try and point scorer with fourteen tries.

2017 Season

In February, Latrell played in the 2017 All Stars match. In the first game of the NRL season, he scored three tries. This helped the Roosters win 32–18 against the Gold Coast Titans. He also scored the winning try in a finals game against the Broncos.

2018 Season

Latrell was chosen to play for New South Wales in The 2018 State of Origin series. This was a big achievement for him. He scored a try in the first game of the series. New South Wales won the series, which was their first Origin shield since 2014.

In the NRL 2018 finals, Latrell missed a game due to a suspension. On 30 September, he played in the 2018 NRL Grand Final. He scored a try and kicked four goals. The Sydney Roosters won the game 21–6 against the Melbourne Storm. Latrell was named Male Sportsperson of the Year at the National Dreamtime Awards 2018.

2019 Season

In February, Latrell played as a centre in the 2019 All Stars match. In round 6 of the 2019 NRL season, he scored a try. He also kicked the winning field goal for the Sydney Roosters against Melbourne. In round 8, Latrell scored three tries and kicked seven goals. The Sydney Roosters won 42–12 against the Wests Tigers.

In Game 1 of the 2019 State of Origin series, Latrell was sent off the field for a short time. He was not chosen for the next games. In round 14, he scored two tries and kicked five goals against the Bulldogs. The Roosters won 38–12.

In round 18 against Newcastle, Latrell scored a try and kicked eight goals. The Sydney Roosters won 48–10. In round 20 against the Gold Coast, he scored two tries and kicked nine goals. The Roosters won 58–6. In round 22, he scored two tries and kicked five goals against the New Zealand Warriors. The Roosters won 42–6.

On 2 October, Latrell was named the Dally M centre of the year. He played in the club's 2019 NRL Grand Final victory. The Roosters won against the Canberra Raiders. On 25 October, Latrell kicked four goals for Australia. They won 26–4 against New Zealand in the Oceania Cup.

Playing for South Sydney Rabbitohs

2020 Season

In January, Latrell moved from the Sydney Roosters to the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He signed a one-year deal. In February, he played as a fullback in the 2020 All Stars match.

Latrell played his first game for South Sydney in round 1 of the 2020 NRL season. In round 5, he scored his first try for South Sydney. They defeated the Gold Coast Titans 32–12. In round 15, Latrell scored two tries and kicked one goal. South Sydney won 56–16 against Manly-Warringah.

2021 Season

In January, Latrell signed a two-year contract extension with South Sydney. In February, he played as a fullback in the 2021 All Stars match. He kicked two goals.

In round 5 of the 2021 NRL season, Latrell scored two tries and kicked a field goal. South Sydney won 35–6 against Brisbane. Latrell played for New South Wales in all three games of the 2021 State of Origin series. He scored two tries and kicked one goal in Game 1.

In round 20, Latrell scored two tries for South Sydney. They won 50–14 against the St. George Illawarra Dragons. In round 24, he scored two tries for South Sydney. They won 54–12 against the Sydney Roosters. Latrell missed the 2021 finals series and the 2021 NRL Grand Final.

2022 Season

Latrell missed the Indigenous All-Stars match and round 1 of the 2022 NRL season. In round 2, Melbourne defeated South Sydney 15–14. Latrell kicked a two-point field goal to send the game into extra time. In round 3, he kicked four goals and scored one try for South Sydney. They won 28–16 against the Sydney Roosters.

In round 5, Latrell scored a try for Souths against the St. George Illawarra Dragons. He had to leave the field due to a hamstring injury. He was expected to be out for eight weeks. In round 16, Latrell returned from injury. He kicked five goals for South Sydney in a 30–12 win over the Parramatta Eels.

In round 17, Latrell was captain for South Sydney. He kicked six goals in their 40–28 win over the Newcastle Knights. In round 25, he kicked two goals for South Sydney. They lost 26–16 to the Sydney Roosters.

The following week, Latrell kicked five goals and scored one try for South Sydney. They won 30–14 against Sydney Roosters in a final. In semi final 2, Latrell kicked seven goals for South Sydney. They won 38–12 against Cronulla. In October, he was named in the Australia squad for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

2023 Season

In round 6 against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Latrell played his 150th first grade game. He scored three tries and kicked seven goals in South Sydney's 50–16 victory. After round 12, Latrell had a calf injury and did not play until round 22. In August, Latrell became a brand ambassador for BLUETTI.

2024 Season

In round 3 of the 2024 NRL season, Latrell scored his 100th NRL try. This happened in a 6–48 loss to the Sydney Roosters. After the game, he spoke to a radio station. NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo later spoke with Latrell about being respectful when speaking publicly.

In round 5 against the New Zealand Warriors, Latrell was suspended for three matches. This was due to an incident during the game. South Sydney officials asked him to stay in Sydney during his suspension.

In round 12 (NRL Indigenous Round), Latrell captained South Sydney. He was later fined for an incident during the game. In round 15 against the Brisbane Broncos, Latrell was also fined for his actions.

In Game 2 of the 2024 State of Origin series, Latrell played as a centre. He scored a try for New South Wales in their 38–18 victory over Queensland. He received a fine for an incident in this game. Latrell injured his foot in South Sydney's NRL round 18 match. Before round 24, South Sydney put him on leave for the rest of the season to recover.

2025 Season

Latrell's one-match NRL suspension from late 2024 will be applied in round 1 of the 2025 NRL season.

Latrell's Personal Life

Latrell's birth name was Goolagong. His parents are Trish Goolagong and Matt Mitchell. His great-aunt is the famous tennis player Evonne Goolagong Cawley. When he was a teenager, Latrell and his two brothers, Shaquai and Lionel, changed their last name to Mitchell. His brother Shaquai also plays for the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Latrell and his partner, Brielle Mercy, have two children.

Before Game 1 of the 2019 State of Origin series, Latrell said he would not sing the Australian National Anthem. He felt it did not represent Aboriginal Australians.

In April 2020, Latrell was fined by the NRL for breaking rules. This happened during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was also fined by the NRL for not following self-isolation rules.

In August 2021, Latrell's uncle said that Latrell was having a tough time. This was after Latrell was suspended from the NRL. South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett confirmed Latrell was doing well. He was still with the team during that time.
