Launceston Priory facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Launceston Priory was an important religious building in Launceston, Cornwall, England. It was a home for a group of religious men called Augustinian canons. Think of them like monks, but they followed a slightly different set of rules.

The Priory's Beginnings

The priory was started in 1127 by a powerful church leader named William Warelwast, who was the Bishop of Exeter. Before this priory, there was an older church nearby at St Stephens that dated all the way back to around 830 AD!

Around 1155, the priory moved from its first spot near Launceston Castle to a new location. This new place was closer to the middle of Launceston, in an area called Newtown, by the River Kensey.

What Happened to the Priory?

In 1539, a big change happened across England. King Henry VIII decided to close down many monasteries and priories, including Launceston Priory. This event is known as the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

King Henry VIII had plans to create a new main church (a cathedral) for Cornwall. Launceston Priory was one of the places he considered for this, along with sites in Bodmin and St Germans. However, none of these plans worked out. Over time, the buildings of Launceston Priory were taken apart. People used the stones and materials for other constructions, and the site was eventually covered up with soil until nothing could be seen.

Finding the Ruins Again

For many years, the priory's remains were hidden underground. But in 1886 and 1888, during the building of a railway and a gas holder, the site was rediscovered! A person named O. B. Peter then dug up parts of the ruins. This allowed people to figure out what the priory's layout looked like.

Visiting Launceston Priory Today

Towards the end of the 20th century, the ruins became a bit neglected. However, in recent years, a lot of work has been done to protect them. The site has been made safer, the grounds are tidier, and it's easier for people to visit. There are also special signs that explain the history of the priory.

A group called the Friends of Launceston Priory now looks after the ruins, working with the Launceston Town Council. You can find the ruins at: 1 Riverside, Newtown, Launceston PL15 8DH They are located behind the church of St Thomas the Apostle.
