About Laura Bruce
Her Journey as an Artist
Laura Bruce studied art at universities in New York and London. She learned about both painting and sculpture. After her studies, she became a visiting professor at several art schools. These included places in London, Berlin, and Dresden. She also taught at summer art workshops. Today, she works as an art educator at a school in Berlin.
Laura Bruce is also the lead singer of a band called Dangerpony. It's a "concept band," which means their music and performances often tell a story or explore an idea. In 2012, Dangerpony performed live at a museum in Norway. This was for an art show called I Wish This Was A Song.
Her Artworks
Laura Bruce creates art using many different methods. She makes drawings, paintings, and sculptures. She also creates installations, which are artworks set up in a space. Sometimes she uses video and performance in her art.
A big part of her work is large black and white drawings. She uses graphite, which is like pencil lead, to make them. These drawings often show nature as something powerful and mysterious. They also explore how people relate to the natural world. Her drawings have strong lines and clear differences between light and dark.
Laura Bruce often uses ideas from history in her art. For example, she made an installation called Perpetual. This artwork included 79 drawings. They were inspired by famous old prints by an artist named Francisco Goya. She showed this work for the first time in Berlin in 2018.
Another project was a drawing and sound installation. It was called Goodbye is Half the Words You Know. For this, she drew 10 portraits of classic country singers. Her band, Dangerpony, then reinterpreted their songs. Parts of this work have been shown in museums in Berlin and Budapest. The full work was part of the I Wish This Was A Song exhibition in Norway.
Art in Public Places
Laura Bruce's art can be found in several public collections. These are places like museums and art foundations that own artworks. Some of her pieces are in the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin and the Berlinische Galerie.
She also created a very large artwork for a public space. This was a huge mural (a painting on a wall) that is 10 by 6 meters big. It's called "De Septentrione ad Astrum." She finished it in 2015 in a city called Aschersleben, Germany. It's a permanent artwork that you can still see there today.
