The Story of Laura Secord
How the Company Started
The Laura Secord company began in 1913. It was started by a man named Frank Patrick O'Connor. He opened the very first store in Toronto, Ontario, on Yonge Street.
O'Connor chose the name "Laura Secord" to honor a brave Canadian heroine. Her name was Laura Secord. In 1813, during a war, she walked about 30 kilometers (19 miles). She made this dangerous journey to warn a British lieutenant about a planned American attack. Her courage helped the British win an important battle.
In 1919, O'Connor also started another candy company in the United States. He called it Fanny Farmer Candy Stores. He used the name of a famous American cooking expert, Fannie Farmer. However, she had no connection to his candy business.
Who Owned Laura Secord?
Over the years, the Laura Secord company has had several owners. In 1969, the O'Connor family sold it to a company called John Labatt Limited. Later, in 1983, a British company named Rowntree Mackintosh bought it.
Then, in 1998, Nestlé's Canadian branch sold Laura Secord to Archibald Candy Corporation. In 2004, Gordon Brothers LLC bought the company. At that time, Laura Secord had 174 stores across Canada and employed 1,600 people.
In 2010, Jean and Jacques Leclerc from Quebec bought the company.
Laura Secord Today
