Laureano Barrau Buñol (born in Barcelona in 1863 – died in Santa Eulària des Riu in 1957) was a talented Spanish impressionist painter. He lived a long life, creating beautiful art for many years.

Becoming an Artist

Barrau started his art journey in his hometown of Barcelona. He then moved to Madrid to study the works of famous old Spanish artists.

When he was 20, Barrau traveled to Paris, France. He joined the Académie des Beaux-Arts, a famous art school. There, a well-known artist named Gerome was his teacher.

Just two years later, Barrau won the Prix de Rome in Barcelona. This special award gave him an amazing chance. He could study the great Italian master painters for three whole years!

A Successful Career

At 28, Barrau became a special member of the Salon de la Nationales des Beaux-Arts de Paris. This was a big honor for artists in Paris.

He won many medals in major cities across Europe for his paintings. Today, you can find his artwork in museums. His paintings are displayed in Spain, Paris, Brussels, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Rio de Janeiro.

When he was 47, Barrau decided to move to the beautiful island of Ibiza. He settled down with his wife in a town called Santa Eulalia del Rio. Many people believe that his best paintings were created during his time there.

Later Life and Legacy

Laureano Barrau lived in Santa Eulalia for the rest of his life. He passed away in 1957 when he was 94 years old. He is buried in the cemetery in Santa Eulalia.

Barrau's Museum

In 1963, Barrau's wife opened a museum to honor his work. This museum holds about 200 of his paintings. It is located at Puig da Missa in Santa Eulalia. It sits right next to a church that is 400 years old!

Later, the museum was given to the village. However, who officially owns it is still discussed.
