Lauren Ashley Daigle (pronounced DAY-guhl; born September 9, 1991) is an American singer and songwriter. She is known for her contemporary Christian music and pop songs.

After signing with Centricity Music, she released her first album, How Can It Be, in 2015. This album quickly became very popular. It reached number 1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. It also sold so many copies that it was certified Platinum, which is a huge achievement! Three songs from this album, "First," "Trust in You," and "O'Lord," became number 1 hits on the Christian radio charts.

Lauren's third album, Look Up Child, came out in September 2018. A song from this album, "You Say," became a big hit not just in Christian music but also in pop music. The album itself reached number 3 on the main Billboard 200 chart. This made it the highest-charting Christian album by a woman in over 20 years! It also hit number 1 on the Top Christian Albums chart, selling 115,000 copies in its first week.

The song "You Say" reached number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also set a record by staying at number 1 on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart for an amazing 129 weeks! Both the album Look Up Child and the song "You Say" helped Lauren win two Grammy Awards, which are very important music awards.

Besides her two Grammy Awards, Lauren Daigle has won many other honors. These include seven GMA Dove Awards, five Billboard Music Awards, and two American Music Awards. She has also had four songs reach number 1 on both the Billboard Christian Airplay and Hot Christian Songs charts.

Early life

Lauren Daigle was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana. The music around her, like zydeco, blues, and Cajun music, helped shape her musical style. Her mom even called their house "the music box" because Lauren was always singing!

Lauren didn't think about music as a career until she got sick at age 15. She had a virus called cytomegalovirus, which kept her out of school for two years. During this time, she took singing lessons. This helped her express herself creatively. After getting better, she planned to study medicine and do mission work. She finished high school early and spent a year doing mission work in Brazil. Later, she studied Child and Family Studies at Louisiana State University (LSU).

Music career

Career beginnings

Lauren started singing in her school choir and later led the choir at LSU. Her family encouraged her to try out for American Idol in 2010 and 2012. In 2010, she almost made it to the top 24 contestants. In 2012, she reached the Hollywood round but didn't go further.

She first appeared on an album called Hear by North Point InsideOut. She sang two songs, "Close" and "You Alone," live at a church. She also sang "It is Well" on another album, North Point Beginnings, in 2015.

Lauren was asked to sing backup for a local band's mini-album (EP). This EP became very popular on iTunes. After this, a music company called Centricity Music invited her to a workshop. When the main singer for the event got sick, Lauren was asked to step in. This led to her singing on a song called "Nothing Is Wasted" by Jason Gray. Centricity Music was impressed and signed her to their label in 2013.

Lauren's first song as a solo artist was "Light of the World." It was part of a Christmas album in 2013. This song helped her gain fans and attention in the Christian music world. That same year, she went on tour with other artists like Aaron Shust. In September 2014, she released her first mini-album, How Can It Be.

2015–2017: How Can It Be

Lauren Daigle's first full album, How Can It Be, came out on April 14, 2015. It immediately went to number 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums Chart. The album also made it into the Top 20 on the main Billboard Top Albums Chart for all types of music. Lauren quickly became known as one of Christian music's rising stars. Her first song from the album, "How Can It Be," was named one of the top Christian songs of 2014 by iTunes. The album stayed at number 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums Chart for six weeks. About a year and a half after its release, How Can It Be sold enough copies to be certified Gold. Later, it became certified Platinum, meaning it sold over a million copies!

Other songs from How Can It Be were also very successful. "First" reached number 1 on the Billboard Christian Airplay Chart and stayed there for seven weeks. "Trust in You" also hit number 1 and stayed there for eight weeks. Both songs also reached number 1 on the NCA radio chart. "Come Alive (Dry Bones)" reached number 5 on the Billboard Christian Airplay chart.

The next year, she won the top honor of Artist of the Year. She also won Songwriter of the Year and Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year for "Trust in You." That year, she won two K-Love Fan Awards: Artist of the Year and Female Artist of the Year. She received another Grammy nomination in 2017 for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for "Trust in You." She won Female Artist of the Year at the K-Love Fan Awards in 2017 for the second year in a row.

Because the album was so successful, a special version called How Can It Be: Deluxe Edition was released in May 2016. This deluxe version included the original songs, plus two new songs. It also had acoustic versions of "First" and "Come Alive," and a live version of "How Can It Be."

On October 21, 2016, Lauren released Behold: A Christmas Collection, a Christmas album. Several songs from this album were released to Christian radio. These included "Jingle Bells," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "What Child Is This." "O Holy Night" was released the following year, and "Winter Wonderland" was released in 2018.

The Christmas album reached number 29 on the main US Billboard 200 chart. It also debuted at number 18 on the US Billboard Christian Albums Chart, eventually reaching number 1.

In 2017, Lauren was chosen to sing "Almost Human" for the movie soundtrack of Blade Runner 2049.

"You Say" was released on July 13, 2018. It was the first song from her third album, Look Up Child. The album was available for pre-order and officially released on September 7, 2018. This was her first new studio album in three years.

"You Say" became a massive hit, reaching number 1 on the Hot Christian Songs chart. It stayed at number 1 for 60 weeks! This broke the record for the longest time any solo artist had been at number 1 on that chart. After being a huge success on Christian radio, the song was also released to regular pop radio stations. It reached the Adult Top 40, Adult Contemporary, and Mainstream Top 40 charts. It was the second biggest Christian song of 2018. It also reached number 29 on the main Billboard Hot 100 chart. "You Say" won a 2019 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song.

Look Up Child debuted at number 3 on the US Billboard 200 chart. It sold 115,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. This made it Lauren's highest-charting album ever. It was also the highest-charting Christian album by a woman on the Billboard 200 since 1997! The album won Best Contemporary Christian Music Album at the 2019 Grammy Awards. By January 2019, the album had sold 208,000 copies in the U.S.
