Super Bowl LIX was the big championship game for American football. It was played between the National Football Conference (NFC) champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the American Football Conference (AFC) champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. This game decided the best team in the National Football League (NFL) for the 2024 season.

The Eagles won the game 40–22, beating the Chiefs. This was their second Super Bowl win since Super Bowl LII seven years before. It was also a rematch of Super Bowl LVII. The Eagles' victory stopped the Chiefs from winning three Super Bowls in a row, which would have been a first! Jalen Hurts, the Eagles' quarterback, was named the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The game took place on February 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans has hosted the Super Bowl many times, and this was the eighth time it was held in the Superdome. The game was shown on TV by Fox and streamed online by Tubi.

About the Super Bowl

Choosing the Host City

Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, where Super Bowl LIX was played.

New Orleans was first picked to host Super Bowl LVIII in 2024. But the NFL season got longer, pushing the game date later. This new date conflicted with Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans.

So, the NFL decided to move Super Bowl LVIII to another city. Las Vegas was chosen instead. New Orleans was then given Super Bowl LIX, which happened in 2025. This way, it did not conflict with Mardi Gras.

The official logo for Super Bowl LIX was shown on February 12, 2024. It followed a design style used since Super Bowl LVI. The logo featured Roman numerals that included art representing New Orleans.

A local artist named "Queen" Tahj Williams helped design the logo. She is known for her work with Mardi Gras Indians. This was the first time the NFL worked with a local artist for a Super Bowl logo. The design used beads and had red, green, and gold fleur-de-lis patterns. These colors and symbols are linked to Mardi Gras and New Orleans. They also look like the ironwork balconies found in the city's French Quarter.

Game Slogan

Before the game, officials announced a new slogan for the end zone: "Choose Love." This replaced the "End Racism" slogan used in past Super Bowls. The slogan "It Takes All of Us" also stayed in the end zone.

Super Bowl Week Fun

Many exciting events happened during Super Bowl week. Super Bowl Opening Night was held at the Superdome. The Super Bowl Experience was a big fan event at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center. There was also a two-day cultural festival at the French Market.

The Super Bowl LIX Host Committee also held a special Mardi Gras-style parade. It went through the French Quarter the Saturday before the game. The parade featured marching bands from Louisiana State University, Tulane University, and the United States Marine Band. There were also floats for the teams and groups from Mardi Gras, like the New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies and Mardi Gras Indians.

The Teams

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs came into Super Bowl LIX having won the previous two Super Bowls. They were trying to be the first NFL team to win three in a row. Their head coach is Andy Reid. The Chiefs had a great regular season with 15 wins and 2 losses. This was the best record in the NFL.

Their quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, had a good season. He led seven game-winning drives. Travis Kelce was their top receiver, and Kareem Hunt led in rushing yards. Rookie Xavier Worthy also had a strong first year. The Chiefs' offensive line had several top players.

The Chiefs' defense was very strong. Chris Jones and Trent McDuffie were All-Pros. They were a top defense for the second year in a row.

This was the Chiefs' seventh Super Bowl appearance. They had won four Super Bowls before this game. They had played in the Super Bowl four times in the last five seasons. They were the first team to win two Super Bowls in a row and play in a third straight. They hoped to achieve the first-ever "three-peat" in Super Bowl history.

The Philadelphia Eagles, led by head coach Nick Sirianni, had a strong season with 14 wins and 3 losses. This was the Eagles' fifth time playing in the Super Bowl. They had won Super Bowl LII before.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts had a very good season. He had career bests in many areas. Running back Saquon Barkley had an amazing year, rushing for over 2,000 yards. The Eagles' receiving group included A. J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert. Their offensive line was also one of the best in the league.

Under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, the Eagles had the top-ranked defense in the NFL. Zack Baun led the team in tackles. Key players on defense included Jalen Carter, Josh Sweat, and rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.

How They Reached the Super Bowl

The Chiefs entered the playoffs as the top team in the AFC. They had a first-round break. In the Divisional Round, they beat the Houston Texans 23–14. Then, in the AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills 32–29. This was the fourth time in five seasons the Chiefs beat the Bills in the playoffs.

The Eagles were the second-best team in the NFC playoffs. In the Wild Card Round, they beat the Green Bay Packers 22–10. In the Divisional Round, the Eagles won against the Los Angeles Rams 28–22. The Eagles then defeated the Washington Commanders 55–23 in the NFC Championship Game. They set a record for the most points scored in a conference championship game.
