Super Bowl LIX was a big championship game in American football. It decided the best team in the National Football League (NFL) for the 2024 season. The Philadelphia Eagles (from the NFC) played against the Kansas City Chiefs (from the AFC). The Eagles won 40–22. This was a rematch of Super Bowl LVII from two years before. The Chiefs had won the last two Super Bowls, so they were trying for a third win in a row!

The Eagles won their first Super Bowl since Super Bowl LII seven years ago. This was their second Super Bowl win ever. Jalen Hurts, the Eagles' quarterback, was named Super Bowl MVP. He scored three touchdowns (two by passing, one by running). He also completed 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards. Hurts set a new Super Bowl record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 72 yards.

The Chiefs had a great regular season with a 15–2 record. They were hoping to be the first team to win three Super Bowls in a row. The Eagles finished their season with a 14–3 record. They had a much better offense and the best defense in the league. This was their fifth time playing in the Super Bowl.

Many expected Super Bowl LIX to be a very close game. However, the Eagles played much better throughout. The Chiefs didn't score any points until late in the third quarter. They only gained 23 yards in the first half. This was the second-lowest first-half yardage in Super Bowl history. Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs' quarterback, had a tough game. He was sacked six times, which was a career high for him. The Eagles' defense didn't even need to use many blitzes. Mahomes also turned the ball over three times. One of these was a 38-yard interception returned for a touchdown by Cooper DeJean. DeJean was only the second rookie in Super Bowl history to do this. The Eagles used their strong defense and the Chiefs' struggles to build a huge 34-point lead. The Eagles were ahead 40–6 before the Chiefs scored two late touchdowns. These scores happened after many of the Eagles' main players had left the game.

The game was played on February 9, 2025. It took place at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. This was the eleventh Super Bowl held in New Orleans. It was the eighth one in the Superdome. The last time was Super Bowl XLVII in 2013.

Fox televised the game in the United States. It was also streamed on Tubi. Super Bowl LIX became the most watched TV program in American history. It had an average of 127.7 million viewers in the U.S. This broke the record set by Super Bowl LVIII the year before. About 14.5 million viewers watched on streaming platforms. The halftime show featured Kendrick Lamar. It was also the most watched halftime show ever, with over 133.5 million TV viewers.

Choosing the Host City

New Orleans was first chosen to host Super Bowl LVIII in 2024. But in 2020, the NFL changed its season to 17 games. This pushed Super Bowl LVIII to a date that conflicted with Mardi Gras in New Orleans. So, the NFL moved Super Bowl LVIII to Las Vegas. New Orleans was then chosen to host Super Bowl LIX instead. This was because Mardi Gras in 2025 was later, on March 4, avoiding any problems.

The official logo for Super Bowl LIX was shown on February 12, 2024. It followed the same style as recent Super Bowl logos. The Roman numerals in the logo included art that showed off New Orleans. Local artist "Queen" Tahj Williams created the artwork. She is a well-known figure in the Mardi Gras Indians community. This was the first time the NFL worked with a local artist for a Super Bowl logo.

The design was made with beads. It featured red, green, and gold fleur-de-lis patterns, inspired by Mardi Gras. The fleur-de-lis is a symbol often linked to New Orleans. It is also used in the New Orleans Saints team logo. The design also looked like the ironwork balconies found in New Orleans' French Quarter.

Game Security Measures

After a serious incident on Bourbon Street on January 1, 2025, Super Bowl organizers reviewed security. Fifteen people were killed and many injured in a truck attack. This even delayed the 2025 Sugar Bowl at the Superdome. Officials said they would have "deep conversations" about making Super Bowl security even better. The NFL said the game would still be "safe and enjoyable."

New Orleans greatly increased security for the Super Bowl. There were more police officers and stricter rules for movement. Cars were not allowed on Bourbon Street. Special "safe corridors" were set up for important people. Over 2,000 officers, including federal agents and bomb-sniffing dogs, were there. The city's security plan was one of the most advanced in years. It included federal air marshals, rooftop snipers, and anti-drone technology. Security teams also checked the Superdome carefully for any threats.

Game Slogan Change

On February 3, 2025, the NFL announced a change to the end zone slogan. The "End Racism" slogan, used since Super Bowl LV, was changed to "Choose Love." An NFL spokesperson said this change was made because of recent events. These included the New Orleans truck attack, wildfires, and a mid-air collision. The slogan "It Takes All of Us" remained in the end zone.

Super Bowl Week Events

Super Bowl Opening Night was held at the Superdome on February 3. The Super Bowl Experience took place at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center. A two-day cultural festival was also held at the French Market.

The Super Bowl LIX Host Committee organized a special Mardi Gras-style parade. It went through the French Quarter the Saturday before the game. The parade included marching bands from Louisiana State University, Tulane University, and the United States Marine Band. There were also floats for the teams playing in the Super Bowl. Various Mardi Gras groups, called krewes, also participated.

Calls for Boycott

Some people called for a boycott of the game. They claimed that officials had unfairly favored the Chiefs during the 2024 season. This was especially true for the AFC Championship Game. After that game, ticket prices for the Super Bowl dropped by about 30%. This was compared to prices for Super Bowl LVIII. Some thought it was because New Orleans had fewer hotels. Others believed it was because fans were tired of the Chiefs always being in the Super Bowl.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell denied any wrongdoing. He called the idea of games being rigged for the Chiefs "ridiculous." The boycott did not seem to affect the total number of viewers across the country. However, viewership in Buffalo, New York, dropped a lot. Only 237,000 people watched the game there. This was the lowest number since TV viewership tracking began. It was also a 25% drop from the previous year's Super Bowl.

Teams Competing in Super Bowl LIX

Kansas City Chiefs' Journey

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs aimed to win their third Super Bowl in a row.

The Kansas City Chiefs came into Super Bowl LIX trying to make history. They wanted to be the first NFL team to win three Super Bowls in a row. Under their head coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs finished the regular season with a 15–2 record. This was tied for the best record in the NFL.

Their quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, had slightly lower stats than in past seasons. He did not reach 4,000 passing yards and missed the Pro Bowl for the first time as a starter. However, he led seven game-winning drives. Travis Kelce, a tight end, led the team in receiving yards (823). Running back Kareem Hunt led in rushing yards (728). Rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy had a strong season with 742 yards and nine touchdowns. The Chiefs also got wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins during the season. Their offensive line was very strong, with several Pro Bowl players.

The Chiefs' defense was also excellent. It included All-Pros Chris Jones (defensive tackle) and Trent McDuffie (cornerback). They were a top-four defense for the second year in a row.

Super Bowl LIX was the Chiefs' seventh Super Bowl appearance. They had won four Super Bowls before: IV, LIV, LVII, and LVIII. They had lost two: I and LV. They played in the Super Bowl four times in the last five seasons, winning three of them. The Chiefs were the first team to win two Super Bowls in a row and then play in a third straight. No team had won the NFL Championship three times in a row since the Green Bay Packers from 1965 to 1967.

Philadelphia Eagles' Path to the Super Bowl

Jalen Hurts, quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, led his team to the Super Bowl for the second time.

Under head coach Nick Sirianni, the Philadelphia Eagles improved their record from 11–6 in 2023 to 14–3. This was Philadelphia's fifth time in the Super Bowl. They had won Super Bowl LII and lost XV, XXXIX, and LVII.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts had a very good season. He had career highs in completion percentage and passer rating. He only threw five interceptions. However, he threw fewer passes because of the great running game. Saquon Barkley, the team's running back, was named AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year. He became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season. Hurts missed the last three regular season games due to injuries. But he returned for the playoffs. The Eagles' receivers included All-Pro A. J. Brown (1,079 yards) and DeVonta Smith (833 yards). Their offensive line was one of the best in the league.

The Eagles had the top-ranked defense in the NFL. This was under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Linebacker Zack Baun led the team with 151 tackles. The defensive line was very strong. The secondary (defensive backfield) also had many key players. These included rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.

Playoff Journeys

The Chiefs entered the playoffs as the top seed in the AFC. They had a first-round break. In the Divisional Round, they beat the Houston Texans 23–14. In the AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills 32–29. This was the fourth time in five seasons the Chiefs beat the Bills in the playoffs. This win had some debate because of a close call on the field.

The Eagles were the second seed in the NFC playoffs. In the Wild Card Round, they beat the Green Bay Packers 22–10. In the Divisional Round, the Eagles defeated the Los Angeles Rams 28–22. The Eagles then beat the Washington Commanders 55–23 in the NFC Championship Game. They set a record for the most points scored in a conference championship game.

Pre-Game Notes

This game was a rematch of Super Bowl LVII. In that game, the Chiefs beat the Eagles 38–35. This was the fourth time two starting quarterbacks faced each other in two different Super Bowls. In the previous three times, the same quarterback won both games.

This was the eleventh Super Bowl in New Orleans. It was the first since 2013. Both the Chiefs and Eagles had played a Super Bowl in New Orleans before. The Chiefs won Super Bowl IV there. The Eagles lost Super Bowl XV there.

The Eagles were the home team for this Super Bowl. They chose to wear their midnight green home jerseys with white pants. The Chiefs wore their white away jerseys with red pants. Both teams wore the same uniforms as in Super Bowl LVII.

The Eagles practiced at the New Orleans Saints' facility. The Chiefs practiced at Tulane University.

This game was also called the "Andy Reid Bowl." Reid is the winningest head coach for both the Eagles and the Chiefs. He coached the Eagles from 1999 to 2012. He has coached the Chiefs since 2013.

Some people called this game the "Swiftie Bowl II." This was because of the relationship between Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and pop star Taylor Swift. Swift often attended Chiefs games. A survey showed that Swift's connection to the NFL made some fans more interested. But it also made some fans lose interest.

Some groups asked the Chiefs to change their team name. They also asked them to stop the "tomahawk chop" chant. The team's name "Chiefs" came from a nickname for a former Kansas City mayor.

Before the game, actor Jon Hamm introduced the Chiefs. Actor Bradley Cooper introduced the Eagles. A moment of silence was held for football executive Virginia Halas McCaskey, who had recently passed away.

After another Chiefs punt, the Eagles drove to the Chiefs' 30-yard line. But Hurts threw an interception to Bryan Cook. Despite this, the Chiefs again went three-and-out. The Eagles then kicked a 48-yard Jake Elliott field goal. Soon after, Mahomes threw another interception to Cooper DeJean. DeJean returned it 38 yards for a touchdown! Both teams then punted. The Eagles played better than the Chiefs in almost every way. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was named Super Bowl MVP. He completed 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards. He threw one interception and scored three touchdowns. He also ran for 72 yards. This set a new Super Bowl record for rushing yards by a quarterback. However, Barkley broke a record for total rushing yards in a season, including playoffs, with 2,504 yards.

He threw two interceptions and lost one fumble. He finished with 257 passing yards and three touchdowns. In the first half, the Chiefs scored no points and gained only 23 yards. This was the second-lowest first-half yardage in Super Bowl history. The Eagles' defense did not even use many blitzes. This showed how strong their defensive line was.

Super Bowl LIX also featured great play from rookies. Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean intercepted a pass from Mahomes. He returned it for a touchdown. He was the second rookie in Super Bowl history to score a "pick-six" in the Super Bowl. He was also the first player to score a touchdown on his birthday in the Super Bowl. Chiefs rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy set a rookie record for receiving yards (157) and touchdowns (2) in the Super Bowl. He was also the first rookie to have 150 or more receiving yards in any playoff game.
