DeVonta Smith (born November 14, 1998) is an American professional football player. He plays as a wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League (NFL).
DeVonta played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide. In his senior year (2020), he had over 1,800 yards and 23 touchdowns. For his amazing performance, he won the Heisman Trophy, which is a very important award in college football. He was the first wide receiver to win the Heisman since 1991.
Before joining the NFL, DeVonta won two national championships with Alabama. The Eagles picked him tenth overall in the 2021 NFL draft. In 2025, DeVonta won Super Bowl LIX with the Eagles. This made him one of only five football players to win a Super Bowl, a college national title, and the Heisman Trophy.

Early Life and High School
DeVonta Smith grew up in Amite City, Louisiana. He went to Amite High Magnet School. There, he was a talented athlete, playing basketball and football. He also ran track and field. Many colleges wanted him to play football for them because he was a top player. He chose to go to the University of Alabama.
College Football Career
DeVonta played for the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2017 to 2020.
2017 Season: A Championship Play
As a freshman in 2017, DeVonta played in eight games. He caught eight passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns. His most famous play was in the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship game. His only catch was a 41-yard touchdown pass in overtime. This amazing play helped Alabama win the championship 26–23 against Georgia.
2018 Season: Growing Stronger
In 2018, as a sophomore, DeVonta continued to improve. He had 42 catches for 693 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games. In the 2018 Orange Bowl, he caught six passes for 104 yards and one touchdown. Alabama won that game 45–34 against Oklahoma.
2019 Season: Big Plays and Records
The 2019 season was a breakout year for DeVonta. On September 28, he had an incredible game against Ole Miss. He set new personal bests with 274 receiving yards and five touchdowns! Later, against LSU, he caught seven passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns. He finished the season leading Alabama with 1,256 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.
After this great season, some of his teammates decided to go to the NFL. But DeVonta chose to stay at Alabama for his senior year.
2020 Season: Heisman Winner
DeVonta's senior year in 2020 was truly special. He had many outstanding games:
- Against Ole Miss, he caught 13 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. He also scored a rushing touchdown.
- Against Georgia, he had 11 catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns.
- Against Mississippi State, he caught 11 passes for 203 yards and four touchdowns. He gained more yards than the entire opposing team!
- He broke the record for most career receiving touchdowns in the SEC (Southeastern Conference).
- In the 2020 SEC Championship Game against Florida, he had 15 catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns.
- In the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship game against Ohio State, he set records for catches (12) and touchdown catches (three) in a title game. He had 215 yards before leaving early due to a hand injury. Alabama won the championship 52–24. DeVonta was named the Offensive MVP of the game.
DeVonta led the entire nation with 117 catches, 1,856 receiving yards, and 23 receiving touchdowns. He became the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy since 1991. He also won many other awards, including the Biletnikoff Award and the Maxwell Award. His teammates called him the "Slim Reaper" because of his small size and amazing athletic skills.

Professional NFL Career
The Philadelphia Eagles chose DeVonta Smith as the tenth overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. This meant he got to play with his college quarterback, Jalen Hurts, again. Even though he had amazing college stats, some people worried he was too small for the NFL. But he proved them wrong!
2021 Season: Rookie Record
In his very first NFL game against the Atlanta Falcons, DeVonta scored his first touchdown on his first catch! In Week 4, he had seven catches for 122 yards. He also scored two touchdowns in a Week 10 win against the Denver Broncos.
DeVonta had a strong rookie year for the Eagles. He caught 64 passes for 916 yards and five touchdowns. His 916 yards set a new record for the most receiving yards by a rookie in Eagles history.
2022 Season: Over 1,000 Yards
In Week 3 of the 2022 season, DeVonta had a career-high 169 yards and a touchdown against the Washington Commanders. He had five games where he gained over 100 receiving yards. He finished his second season with 95 catches for 1,196 yards and seven touchdowns.
In the playoffs, he scored a touchdown against the New York Giants. In the NFC Championship game, he made an amazing one-handed catch that helped the Eagles score a touchdown. The Eagles won that game and went to Super Bowl LVII. In the Super Bowl, DeVonta was the top receiver with seven catches for 100 yards, but the Eagles lost a close game.
2023 Season: Consistent Performer
DeVonta continued to be a key player for the Eagles in 2023. In Week 2, he had 131 yards and a touchdown against the Vikings. He finished the season with 81 catches for 1,066 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games. In the playoffs, he had eight catches for 148 yards.
2024 Season: Super Bowl Champion
On April 15, 2024, DeVonta signed a new contract with the Eagles. In Week 17, he had 120 yards and two touchdowns against the Cowboys. He ended the 2024 season with 68 catches for 833 yards and eight touchdowns.
In Super Bowl LIX, DeVonta caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Hurts. The Eagles won the Super Bowl 40–22, getting revenge for their loss two years earlier. This was DeVonta's first Super Bowl championship. He also became the fifth player ever to win a Super Bowl, a college national championship, and the Heisman Trophy in his career.

Personal Life
DeVonta Smith got engaged to his childhood sweetheart, Mya Danielle, on December 31, 2024. They have two daughters together.
DeVonta is a Christian. He has shared that his faith is very important to him and has helped him achieve his goals.
