DeVonta Smith (born November 14, 1998) is an American professional football player. He is a wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the NFL, he played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

In his senior year at Alabama in 2020, DeVonta had an amazing season. He gained over 1,800 yards and scored 23 touchdowns. For his outstanding performance, he won the Heisman Trophy, which is a huge award in college football. He was the first wide receiver to win the Heisman since 1991. He also helped Alabama win two national championships. After college, the Eagles picked him tenth overall in the 2021 NFL draft.

Early Life and High School

DeVonta Smith grew up in Amite City, Louisiana. He went to Amite High Magnet School. In high school, he was a talented athlete. He played both basketball and football. He also competed in track and field. Later, he decided to play college football at the University of Alabama.

College Football Career

DeVonta Smith played for the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2017 to 2020. He quickly became a key player for the team.

2017 Season: A Championship Play

As a freshman in 2017, Smith played in eight games. He caught eight passes for 160 yards and scored three touchdowns. His most famous play that year was in the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship. Against Georgia, he caught a 41-yard touchdown pass in overtime. This amazing catch gave Alabama a 26–23 victory and the national championship!

2018 Season: Growing Stronger

In his second year, 2018, Smith continued to improve. He had 42 catches for 693 yards. He also scored six touchdowns in 13 games. In the College Football Playoff Semifinal, he caught six passes for 104 yards and a touchdown. Alabama won that game 45–34 against Oklahoma.

2019 Season: Big Plays and Records

The 2019 season was a breakout year for Smith. On September 28, he had an incredible game against Ole Miss. He set new personal records with 274 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Alabama won that game 59–31. He also had a huge game against LSU, catching seven passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns. By the end of the season, Smith led his team in receiving yards (1,256) and touchdowns (14).

After this great season, many thought Smith would leave college for the NFL. But he decided to stay at Alabama for his senior year.

2020 Season: Heisman Winner

Smith's senior year in 2020 was truly historic. He had many amazing games:

  • Against Ole Miss, he caught 13 passes for 164 yards and scored two touchdowns (one receiving, one rushing).
  • He caught 11 passes for 203 yards and four touchdowns against Mississippi State. He even gained more yards than the entire opposing team!
  • He broke the all-time record for most receiving touchdowns in the SEC (Southeastern Conference).
  • In the SEC Championship against Florida, he had 15 catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns.
  • In the CFP National Championship Game against Ohio State, Smith set new records for catches (12) and touchdown receptions (three) in a championship game. He had 215 yards before leaving early with a hand injury. Alabama won the championship 52–24. Smith was named the Offensive MVP of the game.

Smith finished the season leading the nation with 117 catches, 1,856 receiving yards, and 23 receiving touchdowns. He became the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy since 1991. His teammates at Alabama called him the "Slim Reaper" because of his lean build and incredible athletic skills.

The Philadelphia Eagles chose DeVonta Smith as the tenth overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. They even traded up to get him! Some people worried he might be too small for the NFL. But the Eagles believed in his talent. He signed a four-year contract worth $20.1 million.

2021 Season: Rookie Record

In his very first NFL game against the Atlanta Falcons, Smith scored his first touchdown on his first catch! He had a strong rookie season for the Eagles. He caught 64 passes for 916 yards and five touchdowns. His 916 yards set a new record for most receiving yards by an Eagles rookie.

2022 Season: Super Bowl Bound

In 2022, Smith continued to shine. In Week 3, he had a career-high 169 yards and a touchdown against the Washington Commanders. He had five games where he gained over 100 yards. He finished the season with 95 catches for 1,196 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Eagles made it all the way to Super Bowl LVII. In the NFC Championship game, Smith made an amazing one-handed catch. This play helped the Eagles score a touchdown. In the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs, Smith caught seven passes for 100 yards. The Eagles lost a close game 38–35.

2023 Season: Another Strong Year

Smith continued to be a key player for the Eagles in 2023. He had two games with over 100 receiving yards. He finished the regular season with 81 catches for 1,066 yards and seven touchdowns.

2024 Season: Contract Extension

On April 15, 2024, DeVonta Smith signed a new three-year contract with the Eagles. This deal is worth $75 million, showing how much the team values him!
