Jalen Alexander Hurts (born August 7, 1998) is a talented American football quarterback who plays for the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League (NFL). He started his amazing football journey in college, first with the Alabama Crimson Tide. He helped them reach the College Football Playoff National Championship games in 2016 and 2017. After three years at Alabama, he played his final college season with the Oklahoma Sooners, also making it to the playoffs in 2019.
The Eagles picked Jalen in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. He became their main starting quarterback by the end of his first year. In 2022, he had a fantastic season, leading the Eagles to the top spot in their conference and playing in Super Bowl LVII. For his great performance, he was chosen for the Pro Bowl and earned second-team All-Pro honors. In 2024, Jalen led the Eagles to win Super Bowl LIX and was named the Super Bowl MVP! As the Eagles' starting quarterback, he has guided them to five playoff appearances, three division titles, and two Super Bowl games. He has also been selected for the Pro Bowl three times.

Jalen Hurts: A Football Star's Journey
Early Life and High School Achievements
Jalen Hurts grew up in Channelview, Texas, where he attended Channelview High School. His father, Averion, was the football coach at the school during Jalen's time there. In his senior year, Jalen threw for 2,384 yards and 26 touchdowns. He also ran for 1,391 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Jalen was recognized as a top player in high school. He was a four-star recruit, meaning he was one of the best young quarterbacks in the country. On June 5, 2015, he decided to play college football for the University of Alabama.
Besides football, Jalen was also very strong and participated in powerlifting. As a sophomore, he could squat 500 pounds! He even became a regional finalist in his weight class.
College Football Career Highlights
Playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide
In 2016, Jalen joined the Alabama Crimson Tide football team as a freshman. He quickly became the starting quarterback, which was a big deal. He was the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Alabama in 32 years!
Jalen had an amazing freshman year. He threw for 2,780 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also ran for 954 yards and 13 touchdowns, setting a new school record for rushing yards by a quarterback. He led Alabama to a perfect 12–0 record in the regular season. He won the SEC Offensive Player of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year awards. Alabama played in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship but lost a close game to the Clemson Tigers.
In 2017, Jalen continued to lead the Tide, finishing the regular season with an 11–1 record. They made it to the College Football Playoff again. In the championship game against the Georgia Bulldogs, Jalen was replaced by another freshman, Tua Tagovailoa, who led the team to a comeback victory. Jalen finished the season with 2,081 passing yards and 17 touchdowns.
During his junior year in 2018, Jalen mostly played as a backup. However, he stepped in during the 2018 SEC Championship Game when Tua Tagovailoa was injured. Jalen led Alabama to a thrilling 35–28 comeback win against Georgia. He earned his B.A. degree in communication and information sciences in December 2018.
Excelling with the Oklahoma Sooners
On January 16, 2019, Jalen announced he would transfer to the University of Oklahoma for his final year of college football. He was able to play right away as a graduate transfer.
In his very first game for the Sooners on September 1, 2019, Jalen set a new record for total yards in a debut game. He had 508 yards of offense! He helped Oklahoma start the season with a 7–0 record. Jalen led the Sooners to a Big 12 Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff.
The Sooners' season ended with a loss to LSU in the 2019 Peach Bowl. Jalen had a fantastic season, throwing for 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns, and rushing for 1,298 yards and 20 touchdowns. He finished second in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, an award for the best college football player. His great performance at Oklahoma showed everyone he was ready for the NFL. He completed his M.A. degree in human relations in May 2023.

Becoming an NFL Quarterback
Starting with the Philadelphia Eagles (2020-2021)
The Philadelphia Eagles chose Jalen Hurts as the 53rd overall pick in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. He started as the third-string quarterback but quickly moved up to the backup position.
On December 6, 2020, Jalen took over as quarterback during a game against the Green Bay Packers. He threw his first career touchdown pass. A few days later, he was named the starting quarterback for the Eagles. In his first NFL start, he led the Eagles to a 24–21 victory over the New Orleans Saints. He threw for 167 yards and ran for 106 yards in that game.
Before the 2021 season began, Jalen changed his jersey number to No. 1. He was officially named the starting quarterback by the new head coach, Nick Sirianni. In the first game of the season, he led the Eagles to a big 32–6 win against the Atlanta Falcons, throwing for three touchdowns. During the season, the Eagles often used a special play called the "Tush Push" where Jalen was pushed forward by teammates for short gains. He helped the Eagles reach the playoffs in 2021. He finished the season with 3,144 passing yards and 16 touchdowns, plus 784 rushing yards and ten rushing touchdowns.
Leading the Eagles to the Super Bowl (2022)
The 2022 season was a breakout year for Jalen Hurts. In Week 1, he had 243 passing yards and 90 rushing yards with a touchdown. He continued to play exceptionally well, earning the NFC Offensive Player of the Month award for September.
Jalen led the Eagles to an impressive 8–0 start, a first for an Eagles quarterback. He earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week in Week 12 after rushing for 157 yards and throwing for 153 yards and two touchdowns. He became the first player ever to have over 150 rushing yards, 150 passing yards, and multiple passing touchdowns in a single game.
Jalen helped the Eagles secure a playoff spot. Despite a sprained throwing shoulder, he led the team to a 14–1 record as a starter. He finished the season with 3,701 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, and 13 rushing touchdowns. His outstanding performance earned him his first Pro Bowl selection and second-team All-Pro honors. He was also a finalist for the NFL Most Valuable Player Award, finishing second in the voting.
In the playoffs, Jalen led the Eagles to victories over the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers, sending them to Super Bowl LVII. In the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs, Jalen threw for 304 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 70 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns, setting new Super Bowl records for a quarterback. He tied the record for most points scored by a single player in a Super Bowl with 20. However, the Eagles lost the game 38–35 in a very close contest.
Record-Breaking Seasons (2023-2024)
On April 17, 2023, Jalen signed a five-year contract extension for $255 million. At the time, this made him the highest-paid player in NFL history. The deal also included a special no-trade clause, a first for the Eagles team.
In Week 9 of the 2023 season, Jalen scored his 33rd career rushing touchdown, breaking the Eagles' record for quarterbacks previously held by Randall Cunningham. He became the first quarterback in NFL history to have three seasons in a row with at least 10 rushing touchdowns. In Week 16, he scored his 15th rushing touchdown of the season, breaking Cam Newton's NFL record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season. He also broke the Eagles' franchise record for total touchdowns in a season with 36. Jalen earned Pro Bowl honors for the 2023 season.
The 2024 season was another historic year for Jalen. He led the Eagles to a 34–29 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Brazil in their season debut. After a strong regular season, Jalen guided the Eagles through the playoffs. They defeated the Packers and the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card and Divisional Rounds.
In the NFC Championship against the Washington Commanders, Jalen had four touchdowns and led the offense to a dominant 55–23 win. This victory sent the Eagles to Super Bowl LIX. In Super Bowl LIX, Jalen threw for 221 yards with two touchdowns and also rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles won 40–22 against the Kansas City Chiefs, getting revenge for their loss two years earlier. Jalen was named Super Bowl MVP for his amazing performance!
The 2025 Season and Key Moments
Following their Super Bowl victory, Jalen and the Eagles started the 2025 season by hosting the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL Kickoff game. Jalen led the Eagles to four straight wins to begin the season. He threw for 609 yards and ran for 41 yards during this winning streak. He threw his first passing touchdown of the season in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams.
After two losses, Jalen had an incredible game in Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings. He passed for 326 yards and 3 touchdowns, achieving a perfect passer rating for the first time in his professional career. He became the third Eagles quarterback to do so. However, in a December 8 overtime loss against the Los Angeles Chargers, Jalen had a challenging game, turning the ball over five times.
In the Wild Card Round playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers, Jalen completed 20 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown. The Eagles lost the game 23–19.

Beyond the Field: Personal Life and Interests
Jalen's parents are Pamela and Averion Hurts. He has two siblings: an older brother, Averion, and a younger sister, Kynnedy. His brother Averion was also a starting quarterback for Texas Southern University. Jalen married his college sweetheart, Bryonna "Bry" Rivera Burrows, on June 14, 2025.
Jalen is a Baptist and often talks about his faith. He has said that he keeps God at the center of everything he does.
In 2022, Jalen filed for a trademark for the phrase "HURTS SO GOOD." He plans to use it for a clothing line that includes clothes for men, women, and children.
Jalen is a strong supporter of women in sports. He has an all-female management team, including his social media, marketing, and sports agent team members. In 2021, he honored women in sports through the NFL's "My Cause, My Cleats" program. In 2023, Jalen and his teammates even made a cameo appearance on the TV show Abbott Elementary because he was a big fan!
Jalen also provided vocals on the Christmas album A Philly Special Christmas in 2022. In 2025, he was recognized on the Time 100 list, which features the 100 most influential people in the world. He is also the godfather to the daughter of his NFL teammate A. J. Brown.
