Jalen Alexander Hurts (born August 7, 1998) is a talented American football quarterback. He plays for the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League (NFL).
Jalen started his college football journey with the Alabama Crimson Tide. He led them to the national championship games in 2016 and 2017. After a season as a backup at Alabama, he played his final college year with the Oklahoma Sooners. He helped them reach the 2019–20 College Football Playoff.
The Eagles picked Jalen in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. He became their main quarterback during his first year. In 2022, he had an amazing season. He led the Eagles to the Super Bowl LVII and earned Pro Bowl honors. In the 2024 season, Jalen led the Eagles to win Super Bowl LIX. He was even named Super Bowl MVP! He is the first Eagles quarterback to play in multiple Super Bowls. He is also the fourth black quarterback to win the Super Bowl. Jalen has led Philadelphia to the playoffs in all four seasons as their main starter. He has been chosen for the Pro Bowl twice.

Jalen's Early Life and High School Football
Jalen Hurts was born in Houston, Texas, on August 7, 1998. He grew up in Channelview, Texas. He went to Channelview High School. His father, Averion, was the football coach there. He coached Jalen throughout his high school years.
As a senior, Jalen threw for 2,384 yards and 26 touchdown passes. He also ran for 1,391 yards and 25 touchdowns. He was a top player, known for being able to both pass and run well. Many colleges wanted him to play for them. On June 5, 2015, Jalen decided to commit to the University of Alabama.
Besides football, Jalen was also a strong powerlifting athlete. In high school, he could squat 500 pounds! He even became a regional finalist in powerlifting.
College Football Journey
Jalen Hurts played college football for two different teams. First, he played for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Then, he transferred to the Oklahoma Sooners.
Playing for Alabama
Jalen spent three seasons playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team.
Freshman Year: A Strong Start
In 2016, Jalen started as a freshman quarterback for Alabama. He was the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Alabama in 32 years! He had a fantastic first season.
He threw for 2,780 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also ran for 954 yards and 13 touchdowns. This broke the school record for rushing yards by a quarterback. He set a new school record with 36 total touchdowns in one season. Jalen was the first Alabama player to pass for 300 yards and rush for 100 yards in the same game.
Alabama finished the 2016 season with a perfect record of 12 wins and 0 losses. Jalen led his team to win the 2016 SEC Championship. He was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year. He also earned SEC Freshman of the Year. Alabama played in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship but lost a close game to the Clemson Tigers.
Sophomore Year: National Champion

In 2017, Jalen led Alabama to an 11–1 record in the regular season. They made it to the College Football Playoff. In the semifinal game, the 2018 Sugar Bowl, Jalen was named the offensive MVP.
In the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship game, Alabama was losing at halftime. Jalen was replaced by another freshman quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa led the team to a comeback victory in overtime. Even though he was benched, Jalen was still part of the team that won the national championship. He finished the season with 2,081 passing yards and 17 passing touchdowns. He also had 855 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns.
Junior Year: A Backup Role
After the championship win, Tagovailoa became the main starting quarterback. Jalen played a backup role in 2018. He still played in ten games and threw for seven touchdowns.
In the 2018 SEC Championship Game, Tagovailoa got hurt. Jalen stepped in and led Alabama to a comeback win against Georgia. This win secured their spot in the College Football Playoff. Jalen earned his college degree in communication in December 2018.
Playing for Oklahoma
In January 2019, Jalen decided to transfer to the University of Oklahoma. He could play right away because he had already graduated from Alabama.
In his first game for Oklahoma, Jalen set a new school record. He had 508 total yards of offense! He helped Oklahoma start the season with seven wins in a row. He led the Sooners to win the Big 12 Championship. They also made it to the College Football Playoff.
Jalen had a fantastic season with Oklahoma. He threw for 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also ran for 1,298 yards and 20 touchdowns. He finished second in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, which is given to the best college football player. Jalen earned his master's degree in human relations in May 2023.

Professional Football Career
Jalen Hurts was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020. He quickly became a star quarterback in the NFL.
2020 Season: Rookie Year with the Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles chose Jalen as the 53rd pick in the 2020 NFL draft. He started the season as a backup. But by Week 14, he became the main starting quarterback.
In his first NFL start, Jalen led the Eagles to a 24–21 win over the New Orleans Saints. He threw for 167 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 106 yards. In Week 15, he threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown.
2021 Season: Leading the Eagles to the Playoffs
Before the 2021 season, Jalen changed his jersey number to No. 1. The new head coach, Nick Sirianni, named him the starting quarterback.
Jalen led the Eagles to a big 32–6 victory in their first game against the Atlanta Falcons. He threw for three touchdowns in that game. He helped the Eagles reach the playoffs that season. Jalen finished the 2021 season with 3,144 passing yards and 16 passing touchdowns. He also led all quarterbacks with 784 rushing yards and ten rushing touchdowns.
In the playoffs, the Eagles lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
2022 Season: MVP Runner-Up and Super Bowl Appearance
Jalen had an incredible 2022 season. He was named NFC Offensive Player of the Month for September. He led the Eagles to an 8–0 record, which was a first for an Eagles quarterback.
In Week 12, he rushed for 157 yards and threw for two touchdowns. He became the first player ever with 150+ rushing yards, 150+ passing yards, and multiple passing touchdowns in one game. He helped the Eagles make the playoffs again.
Jalen finished the season with a 14–1 record as a starter. He had 35 total touchdowns (22 passing, 13 rushing). He also had 3,701 passing yards. He was chosen for his first Pro Bowl and was named Second Team All-Pro. Jalen finished second in the voting for the NFL Most Valuable Player Award.
Jalen led the Eagles to big wins in the playoffs. They beat the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers. This sent them to Super Bowl LVII to play the Kansas City Chiefs. In the Super Bowl, Jalen threw for 304 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 70 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns. These were the most rushing yards and touchdowns by a quarterback in Super Bowl history! He tied the record for most points scored in a Super Bowl with 20. The Eagles lost a very close game, 38–35.
2023 Season: Breaking Records
In April 2023, Jalen signed a huge five-year contract extension. It made him one of the highest-paid players in NFL history at the time.
In Week 8, Jalen threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns. He earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors. In Week 9, he scored his 33rd career rushing touchdown. This broke the Eagles' record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. In Week 12, he scored his 10th rushing touchdown of the season. He became the first quarterback in NFL history to have three seasons in a row with at least 10 rushing touchdowns.
In Week 16, Jalen scored his 15th rushing touchdown of the season. This broke the record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season. The Eagles made the playoffs again, and Jalen earned another Pro Bowl selection.
2024 Season: Super Bowl Champion and MVP
Jalen led the Eagles to a 34–29 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Brazil to start the season. He helped the Eagles achieve their first 10-game winning streak in franchise history. They finished with a 12–2 record and clinched their fourth straight playoff spot.
Jalen suffered a concussion in Week 16 and missed the final two regular season games. However, he was cleared to play in the playoffs. He led the Eagles to wins over the Packers and the Los Angeles Rams. In the NFC Championship, Jalen had four touchdowns and led the Eagles to a dominant 55–23 win over the Commanders. This sent them to Super Bowl LIX.
In Super Bowl LIX, Jalen threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles won 40–22 against the Chiefs, getting revenge for their loss two years earlier. Jalen was named Super Bowl MVP for his amazing performance. He became the third Black quarterback to win this award. With this victory, Jalen became the fourth Black starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

Jalen's Personal Life
Jalen's parents are Pamela and Averion Hurts. He has two siblings: an older brother named Averion and a younger sister named Kynnedy. His brother Averion also played quarterback in college. Jalen's parents always made sure one of them was at his game and the other at his brother's game.
Jalen is a Baptist. He often talks about his faith, saying, "I keep God at the center of everything." He believes that everything happens for a reason.
In 2022, Jalen applied for a trademark for the phrase "HURTS SO GOOD." He plans to use it for a clothing line for men, women, and children.
Jalen is a big supporter of women in sports. He has an all-female management team. This includes his social media, marketing, and sports agent team members. In 2021, he honored women in sports through an NFL initiative.
In 2022, Jalen also sang on a Christmas album called A Philly Special Christmas.
