Jalen Alexander Hurts (born August 7, 1998) is an American professional football quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League (NFL). He is known for his strong arm and ability to run with the ball.

Jalen started his college football journey with the Alabama Crimson Tide. He helped them reach the College Football Playoff National Championship games in 2016 and 2017. After being a backup in 2018, he played his last college season with the Oklahoma Sooners. He also led them to the 2019–20 College Football Playoff.

The Eagles picked Jalen in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. He became their main starting quarterback by the end of his first year. In 2022, Jalen had an amazing season. He led the Eagles to the top spot in their conference and to Super Bowl LVII. For his great play, he was chosen for the Pro Bowl and named second-team All-Pro.

In the 2024 season, Jalen led the Eagles to win Super Bowl LIX. He was named Super Bowl MVP. This made him the first Eagles quarterback to play in more than one Super Bowl. He also became the fourth Black quarterback to win the Super Bowl. Jalen is one of only four starting quarterbacks to win both a Super Bowl and an NCAA National Championship. The others are Ken Stabler, Joe Namath, and Joe Montana.

Early Life and High School Football

Jalen Hurts grew up in Channelview, Texas. He went to Channelview High School. His father, Averion, was the football coach at the high school while Jalen played there.

In his senior year, Jalen threw for 2,384 yards and 26 touchdown passes. He also ran for 1,391 yards and 25 touchdowns. He was a top player, known for being able to both pass and run well. Many colleges wanted him to play for them. On June 5, 2015, Jalen decided to play for the University of Alabama.

Besides football, Jalen was also good at powerlifting. In high school, he could squat 500 pounds (230 kg) of weight. He even became a regional finalist in powerlifting.

College Football Journey

Freshman Year Success

In 2016, Jalen Hurts joined the Alabama Crimson Tide football team as a freshman. He quickly became the starting quarterback. He was the first true freshman in 32 years to start at quarterback for Alabama.

Jalen had a record-breaking freshman season. He threw for 2,780 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also ran for 954 yards and 13 touchdowns. This broke the school record for rushing yards by a quarterback. He set a new school record with 36 total touchdowns in one season. Jalen was the first Alabama quarterback under coach Nick Saban to rush for more than 11 touchdowns in a season.

He led Alabama to a perfect 12–0 record in the regular season. On December 3, 2016, he helped his team win the 2016 SEC Championship. He was named SEC Offensive Player of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year. Alabama played in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship but lost to the Clemson Tigers.

Sophomore Season and Championship Win

In 2017, Jalen led the Tide to an 11–1 regular season record. They made it to the College Football Playoff again. In the 2018 Sugar Bowl semifinal, Jalen was named the offensive MVP.

In the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship against the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama was losing at halftime. Jalen was replaced by freshman Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa led the team to a comeback victory. Jalen finished the 2017 season with 2,081 passing yards and 17 touchdowns. He also rushed for 855 yards and eight touchdowns.

Junior Year as Backup

After Tagovailoa's championship win, he became the starting quarterback in 2018. Jalen played as a backup but still got a lot of playing time. He threw for seven touchdowns during the regular season.

In the 2018 SEC Championship Game, Jalen stepped in when Tagovailoa got hurt. He led Alabama to a 35–28 comeback win against Georgia. This win secured their spot in the College Football Playoff. Jalen earned his college degree in communication and information sciences in December 2018.

Transferring to Oklahoma

On January 16, 2019, Jalen announced he would transfer to the University of Oklahoma. Since he had already graduated from Alabama, he could play right away for Oklahoma in the 2019 season.

In his first game for Oklahoma, Jalen set a new school record for total yards in a debut. He had 508 total yards against Houston. He helped Oklahoma start the season with a 7–0 record. Jalen led Oklahoma to a Big 12 Championship. They also earned a spot in the College Football Playoff. Their season ended with a loss to LSU in the 2019 Peach Bowl.

Jalen had a fantastic season with Oklahoma. He threw for 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,298 yards and 20 touchdowns. He finished second in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, an award for the best college football player. Jalen's great performance at Oklahoma showed how much he had improved. He earned his master's degree in human relations in May 2023.

Professional NFL Career

2020 Season: Rookie Year with the Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles picked Jalen Hurts as the 53rd player in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. He started the season as the third-string quarterback. By Week 2, he became the backup, often used for special plays where he would run the ball.

On December 6, 2020, Jalen took over as quarterback during a game against the Green Bay Packers. He threw his first career touchdown pass. On December 8, 2020, he was named the starting quarterback for the Eagles. In his first NFL start, he led the Eagles to a 24–21 win over the New Orleans Saints. He threw for 167 yards and ran for 106 yards.

In Week 15, against the Arizona Cardinals, Jalen had a great game. He threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 63 yards and one touchdown. In the last game of the season, Jalen was taken out of the game early. Some people thought the coach might have been trying to lose the game on purpose. The coach was fired shortly after.

2021 Season: Becoming the Full-Time Starter

Before the 2021 season, Jalen changed his jersey number to No. 1. The new head coach, Nick Sirianni, named him the starting quarterback for the season.

In the first game, Jalen led the Eagles to a big 32–6 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He threw for three touchdowns. In Week 12, Jalen hurt his ankle and missed one game. He returned later and helped the Eagles make it to the playoffs. He was named a Pro Bowl alternate for the 2021 season.

Jalen finished the 2021 season with 3,144 passing yards and 16 touchdowns. He also led all quarterbacks in rushing yards (784) and rushing touchdowns (10). In the playoffs, the Eagles lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

2022 Season: MVP Runner-Up and Super Bowl Appearance

Jalen had an amazing 2022 season. He was named NFC Offensive Player of the Month for September. He became the first Eagles quarterback to lead the team to an 8–0 record.

In Week 12, Jalen ran for 157 yards and threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns. This earned him NFC Offensive Player of the Week. He was the first player ever to have 150+ rushing yards, 150+ passing yards, and multiple passing touchdowns in one game. He led the Eagles to the playoffs again.

Jalen finished the season with a fantastic 14–1 record as a starter. He had 35 total touchdowns (22 passing, 13 rushing). He was chosen for his first Pro Bowl and was named Second Team All-Pro. Jalen was also one of the top five finalists for the NFL Most Valuable Player Award, finishing second in the voting.

In the playoffs, Jalen led the Eagles to big wins over the Giants and 49ers. This sent them to Super Bowl LVII to play the Kansas City Chiefs. In the Super Bowl, Jalen threw for 304 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 70 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns. These were the most rushing yards and touchdowns by a quarterback in Super Bowl history. He tied the record for most points scored in a Super Bowl with 20. However, the Eagles lost a close game, 38–35.

2023 Season: Record-Breaking Rushing Touchdowns

On April 17, 2023, Jalen signed a big five-year contract extension. It was one of the largest deals in NFL history at the time.

In Week 8, Jalen threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns. He earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week. In Week 9, he scored his 33rd career rushing touchdown, setting a new Eagles record for quarterbacks. In Week 12, he became the first quarterback in NFL history to have at least 10 rushing touchdowns in three seasons in a row.

In Week 16, Jalen scored his 15th rushing touchdown of the season. This broke the record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season. He also broke the Eagles' franchise record for total touchdowns in a season. Jalen earned Pro Bowl honors again for the 2023 season. The Eagles lost in the Wild Card round of the playoffs to the Buccaneers.

2024 Season: Super Bowl LIX Champion and MVP

In his first game of the 2024 season, Jalen led the Eagles to a 34–29 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Brazil. After a slow start, Jalen helped the Eagles win against the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals. On November 10, he had four total touchdowns in a big win over the Cowboys.

In Week 14, Jalen helped the Eagles secure their fourth straight playoff spot. The next week, he led the Eagles to their first 10-game winning streak in franchise history. Jalen suffered a concussion in Week 16 and missed the last two regular season games. He returned for the playoffs.

Jalen led the Eagles to wins over the Packers and Rams in the playoffs. In the NFC Championship against the Commanders, Jalen had four touchdowns and led the offense to a huge 55–23 win. This sent them to Super Bowl LIX. In Super Bowl LIX, Jalen threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 72 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles won 40–22 against the Chiefs, getting revenge for their loss two years earlier. Jalen was named Super Bowl MVP for his amazing performance. He became the third Black quarterback to win this honor and the fourth black starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

Personal Life and Interests

Jalen's parents are Pamela and Averion Hurts. He has two siblings: an older brother, Averion, and a younger sister, Kynnedy. His brother Averion was also a quarterback for Texas Southern University. Jalen's parents made sure one of them attended his game every week, while the other went to Averion's game. On June 14, 2025, Jalen married his college sweetheart, Bryonna "Bry" Rivera Burrows.

Jalen is a Baptist. He often talks about his faith, saying, "I keep God at the center of everything. I give Him all the praise, I lean on Him all the time. And I know that everything unfolds the way it’s supposed to."

In 2022, Jalen applied for a trademark for the phrase "HURTS SO GOOD." He plans to use it for a clothing line.

Jalen is a strong supporter of women in sports. He has an all-female management team, including his social media, marketing, and sports agent team members. In 2021, he honored women in sports during the NFL's "My Cause, My Cleats" event. In 2023, Jalen and his teammates, Jason Kelce and Brandon Graham, made a cameo appearance on the TV show Abbott Elementary because Jalen was a big fan.

In 2022, Jalen provided vocals for the Christmas album A Philly Special Christmas. In 2025, Jalen was named to the Time 100 list, which features the 100 most influential people in the world. He also has a close friendship with his teammate, wide receiver A. J. Brown. Jalen is the godfather to Brown's daughter.
