About Lauri Ylönen
Starting The Rasmus
Lauri Ylönen started the band The Rasmus in 1994. He was in high school with Eero Heinonen, Pauli Rantasalmi, and Janne Heiskanen. The band first had different names like Trashmosh and Anttila. They played their first show in 1994, performing rock and funk songs. Lauri became the lead singer, writing and composing many of their songs. He left school to focus on the band.
In 1998, after releasing three albums, Janne Heiskanen left the band. In 1999, Aki Hakala became The Rasmus' new drummer. The band also signed with a new record label, Playground Music Scandinavia.
The Dynasty Group
In 1999, a group called Dynasty was formed. It included three Finnish bands: The Rasmus, Killer, and Kwan. Dynasty was created to show the strong friendship between the bands and their members. Many members have tattoos or wear the Dynasty logo. The bands often worked on music together.
Other Music Projects
Lauri Ylönen has also worked with other artists. He sang with Siiri Nordin from the band Killer on a song called "All I Want."
In 2004, Lauri recorded a song called "Bittersweet" with Apocalyptica and HIM's singer Ville Valo. This song was on Apocalyptica's album, Apocalyptica. It was also released as a single with a music video.
A year later, he worked with Apocalyptica again on a song called "Life Burns!". This song was also released as a single and music video. It had a heavier sound than "Bittersweet." Lauri also sang with members of Kwan and Siiri Nordin from Killer on a song called "Chillin' at the Grotto."
Lauri also composed the music for the Finnish movie "Blackout." The soundtrack was released in December 2008.
Solo Music Career
Lauri Ylönen released his first solo album, New World, in March 2011. The first song from the album, "Heavy", came out in February 2011. Lauri said he wanted to release songs that did not fit The Rasmus' style. He produced the album himself with his record label, Dynasty Recordings.
The music video for "Heavy" was directed by Owe Lingvall. He had also directed videos for The Rasmus' songs "Justify" and "October & April". In May 2011, "In The City" became the second single from his album. Its video was filmed in Las Vegas. Lauri toured in Finland and some European countries during the summer of 2011. He was nominated for Best Finnish Act at the MTV EMA's 2011 and won.
