Biography
Starting The Rasmus
Lauri Ylönen began his musical journey in the early 1990s. While attending Suutarila high school, he met Eero Heinonen and Pauli Rantasalmi. Later, Janne Heiskanen joined them. In 1994, Lauri started a band with Eero (bass guitar), Pauli (guitar), and Jarno Lahti (drums). Jarno was later replaced by Janne Heiskanen.
At first, the band had different names like "Trashmosh" and "Anttila." Finally, they settled on "Rasmus." They played their very first show at school in 1994. Their music was a mix of rock and funk. Lauri became the lead singer, and he also wrote and composed the band's songs. He decided to leave school to focus completely on his music career with the band.
In 1998, after releasing three albums, Janne Heiskanen left the band. In 1999, Aki Hakala became The Rasmus' new drummer. Around the same time, the band signed with a new record label called Playground Music Scandinavia.
Dynasty Association
In 1999, a group called Dynasty was formed. This group included three Finnish bands: The Rasmus, Killer, and Kwan. Dynasty was created to show the strong friendship and loyalty between the bands and their members. Many members, including Lauri, have tattoos or wear the Dynasty logo to show their connection. These bands have often worked together on music projects.
Other Music Projects
Lauri Ylönen has also worked with other artists. He sang with Siiri Nordin, the singer of the band Killer, on a song called "All I Want."
In 2004, Lauri recorded a song called "Bittersweet" with Apocalyptica and HIM's singer Ville Valo. This song was featured on Apocalyptica's album, Apocalyptica, and was also released as a single with a music video.
A year later, he collaborated with Apocalyptica again on a song called "Life Burns!" This song was also released as a single and had a music video. "Life Burns!" had a heavier musical style than "Bittersweet." Lauri also sang with members of Kwan and Siiri Nordin from Killer on a song called "Chillin' at the Grotto" at a special event.
One of Lauri's more recent projects was composing the music for the Finnish movie "Blackout." The soundtrack for the movie was released in December 2008.
Solo Music Career
In 2011, Lauri Ylönen announced he would release a solo album. The first song from the album, "Heavy," came out in February 2011. He explained that he had several songs that didn't quite fit The Rasmus's style, and he wanted to release them as a full album. He produced the album himself through his record label, Dynasty Recordings.
The album's title was revealed to be New World. It was released in Finland on March 30, 2011, and then in other European countries. The music video for "Heavy" was directed by Owe Lingvall, who had also directed videos for The Rasmus. In May 2011, Lauri announced that "In The City" would be the second single from his album. The video for this song was filmed in Las Vegas.
Throughout the summer of 2011, Lauri toured at Finnish summer festivals and in some European countries, including Germany. Later that year, a remixed version of "What Are You Waiting For" became his next single. Lauri continued his European tour in 2012, starting with two shows in Russia. He was nominated for Best Finnish Act at the MTV EMA's 2011, which he won. He was then nominated for the Best Worldwide Act category.
