History of Lawndale
Lawndale started to grow in the late 1800s. It grew around a factory called Cleveland Mills. Major H.F. Schenck built this factory. The town got its name from the pretty green lawns around the houses. Many factory workers lived in these homes.
In 1897, Major Schenck's daughter and her husband opened a school. It was called Piedmont Academy. Two years later, in 1899, a train line came to Lawndale. This train connected Lawndale to Shelby. Lawndale officially became a town in 1903.
