Laxo is a small village found at the end of a narrow bay called Laxo Voe. This peaceful spot is located in Vidlin, on the Mainland of Shetland, Scotland. It's a quiet place, but it plays an important role for people living nearby.
Getting Around: The Laxo Ferry
One of the most important things about Laxo is its ferry terminal. From here, a ferry takes people and vehicles across the water to Symbister. Symbister is a village on Whalsay, which is one of the many islands in Shetland. The ferry service is run by the Shetland Islands Council, helping people travel between the islands.
Nature and Fishing at Laxo
If you head north from Laxo, you'll find a hill called the Hill of Laxowater. Close by is a beautiful freshwater lake, or loch, also named Laxo Water. This loch is about 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) long. It's a very popular spot for fishing, especially for trout. Imagine spending a sunny afternoon trying to catch fish in such a calm place!
A Special House: Laxo Cottage
In Laxo, there's a unique house known as Laxo Cottage. It's easy to spot because it's a white house with distinctive black stones on its corners. This cottage used to be the home of the water bailiff. A water bailiff is a person who looks after the local waters, making sure fishing rules are followed and the water environment is healthy.
