History of Layman

Layman is the oldest community in its township. Long ago, it had the only grist mill in the area. A grist mill is a place where grain, like corn or wheat, is ground into flour.

The community was first called Fishtown. This name came from Daniel Fish, who owned a store there. James Lake started this store in 1837. A post office was set up in Fishtown around 1857. People were living in this area even earlier, as the first Methodist church was built in 1824.

Later, the community's name changed to Layman. It was named after Amos Layman. He graduated from Marietta College in 1848. Amos Layman was also the editor of a newspaper called the Marietta Republican. This newspaper supported the Democratic political party. In 1856, he was chosen to be a delegate. This means he was a representative at a big meeting called the Democratic National Convention. At this meeting, people from the Democratic party decide who they want to run for president.
