History of Leadwood

Leadwood was started in January 1906. It was first known as Owl Creek. A company called St. Joe Lead created it as a company town. This means the town was built and run by the mining company for its workers.

The town was located near the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. This railway helped transport goods and people. A post office opened in Leadwood in 1905. It served the community until 1966. The city officially became a city in 1964.
