Lee Redmond started growing her fingernails in the late 1970s. She decided to keep them growing for many years. The Enquirer magazine often wrote about her and how long her nails were getting.

She once thought about cutting her nails in 2006. However, she changed her mind and decided to keep them. Her nails became very famous. She appeared on CBS News and at the Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum.

At one event, her nails were about 86-89 centimeters (34-35 inches) long on average. That's almost a meter long for each nail!

Daily Life with Long Nails

Even with her very long nails, Lee Redmond still enjoyed many activities. She liked riding bikes with her younger sister. She said that some things, like putting on a heavy coat, were tricky. But she managed her daily life quite well.

On a Guinness TV show, she was shown doing everyday tasks. She drove a car, used a vacuum cleaner, washed dishes, and even gave haircuts to her grandchildren. This showed how she adapted to her unique nails.

The Accident

On February 10, 2009, something unexpected happened. Lee Redmond was in a car accident in Holladay, Utah. She was thrown from the car during a four-car crash. Sadly, her record-setting nails broke off in the accident.

She had serious injuries, but thankfully, they were not life-threatening. After losing her nails, she said it was much easier to do things. Her hands felt lighter without the weight of the long nails.

Lee Redmond decided not to grow her nails out again. She said it took 30 years the first time. She didn't think she would live another 30 years to grow them that long again. Her nails are now about 10 centimeters (4 inches) long.
