Shridhar Chillal was born on January 29, 1937, in India. He became famous for having the longest fingernails on a single hand. He stopped cutting his nails in 1952.
His nails grew to an amazing total length of 909.6 centimeters (about 30 feet!). His longest single nail was his thumbnail. It measured 197.8 centimeters (about 6.5 feet!). This incredible achievement earned him a world record.
Living with Record-Breaking Nails
Even though Shridhar Chillal was proud of his unique nails, they caused some difficulties. The extreme weight of his long nails changed the shape of his fingers. It also made it hard for him to use his left hand normally.
He also shared that the heavy nails caused damage to the nerves in his left arm. This nerve damage even led to him losing his hearing in his left ear.
Sharing His Story
Shridhar Chillal appeared in movies and on television. He showed off his amazing nails to the world. One of his appearances was in the film Jackass 2.5.
The Big Nail Clipping Event
On July 11, 2018, Shridhar Chillal's fingernails were finally cut. This special event happened at the Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum in New York City. A technician used a power tool to carefully cut the nails during a "nail clipping ceremony."
Now, three of his record-breaking fingernails are on display. You can see them at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
