Leersum's Past as a Municipality
Until 2006, Leersum was its own municipality. A municipality is like a local government area. It included both the town of Leersum and the nearby area of Darthuizen.
The 2021 Downburst Event
In June 2021, Leersum experienced a powerful weather event called a downburst. A downburst is a strong downward rush of air from a thunderstorm. It can cause damage similar to a tornado.
This downburst caused a lot of damage in Leersum. Many cars and homes were badly damaged by trees that fell during the storm. Because of the fallen trees and damage, the forests around Leersum had to be closed for safety. Staatsbosbeheer, which is the Dutch state forest administration, estimated that the damaged parts of the forest would not be safe for people to visit until the end of 2021.
