Exploring Legends Field
This ballpark was once known as CommunityAmerica Ballpark. It has some unique features. The left field line is 300 feet (91 meters) long. There's an 18-foot (5.5-meter) tall wall in left field. Fans often call this wall "the Little Green Monster."
The distance to left-center field is 411 feet (125 meters). Dead center field is 396 feet (121 meters) away. Right-center field is 409 feet (125 meters). The right field line is 328 feet (100 meters) long. Most outfield walls are about five feet (1.5 meters) high. However, the walls near the bullpens are about 10 feet (3 meters) tall.
A wide path, 25 feet (7.6 meters) across, surrounds the entire playing and seating areas. This path is called a concourse. Legends Field has 6,537 fixed seats for fans. But the stadium can hold over 7,500 people. This includes standing room, picnic areas, and a grassy hill in right field.
A Look at Legends Field's History
Building the Ballpark
Construction on Legends Field began on September 4, 2002. It was built very quickly, taking just over nine months. The ballpark officially opened its doors on June 6, 2003.
Record Crowds and Big Games
Legends Field has seen many large crowds. On June 23, 2007, a record 10,345 fans attended a baseball game. When soccer was played here, attendance often went over 8,000. The biggest crowd for a soccer game was 10,385 people on March 29, 2008. In 2006, the Northern League All-Star game was held at the ballpark.
Soccer Takes the Field
The Kansas City Wizards soccer team played their home games at Legends Field. This was while their new stadium was being built. Because of the soccer games, the baseball field had a special design. Most natural grass baseball fields have dirt paths between the bases. But Legends Field had dirt only around the bases, home plate, and the pitcher's mound. This made it easier to switch between baseball and soccer. The Wizards played their first game here on March 29, 2008. They won 2-0 against D.C. United in front of a sold-out crowd.
Stadium Upgrades and Changes
Before the 2008 season, new bleacher seats were added. These replaced a grassy area in left field. More metal bleachers were also placed along the concourse. These additions increased the stadium's seating capacity. It went from 4,365 seats to 6,537 fixed seats.
On June 3, 2007, the ballpark hosted a unique event. 1,683 guitarists played the song "Smoke on the Water" together. This set a world record for the most guitarists playing one song at the same time.
Naming Rights and New Teams
For many years, the ballpark was named after CommunityAmerica Credit Union. This agreement ended in 2017. For a short time, it was called T-Bones Stadium. In 2019, a company called Pro Athlete, Inc. made a deal. They named the playing surface JustBats Field at T-Bones Stadium.
Later, the local government had some issues with the team's payments. The government then approved a new lease with a different group. This group bought the T-Bones team.
In December 2020, it was announced that the Kansas City NWSL women's soccer team would play their home games here. In January 2021, the stadium was renamed "Field of Legends." This change happened when the T-Bones team became the Kansas City Monarchs. Today, it is simply known as "Legends Field."
