Leigh Bardugo's Early Life

Leigh Bardugo was born in Jerusalem, Israel, on April 6, 1975. She grew up in Los Angeles, California, where her grandparents raised her. She has a mixed background, describing herself as Jewish-Spanish on one side and Russian and Lithuanian on the other.

She went to Yale University and earned a degree in English in 1997. Before she became a published author, she worked in different jobs. These included writing for advertising and newspapers, and even doing makeup and special effects.

Her Amazing Writing Career

Leigh Bardugo's first novel, Shadow and Bone, came out in 2012. This book was the start of her Grisha trilogy. It was nominated for awards and was even featured in The New York Times. The novel became a New York Times Best Seller. Bardugo describes the style of Shadow and Bone as "Tsarpunk." This means it's fantasy inspired by Russia in the early 1800s. The other books in the trilogy, Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising, were published in 2013 and 2014.

The Grishaverse Expands

The Six of Crows duology, which includes Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, was released in 2015 and 2016. These books are set in the same world as the Grisha trilogy, known as the "Grishaverse." Six of Crows was named a New York Times Notable Book. In 2017, Bardugo also published The Language of Thorns. This book is a collection of fairy tales and folk tales from the Grishaverse.

Bardugo also wrote Wonder Woman: Warbringer, which came out in 2017. This book is part of the DC Icons series, which tells new stories about famous DC Comics superheroes.

Her first novel for adult readers, Ninth House, was published in 2019. It won the Goodreads Choice Award for best fantasy novel that year. The sequel to Ninth House, called Hell Bent, was published in January 2023.

Leigh Bardugo has also written essays and short stories for other book collections. Her books have been translated into 22 languages. They are available in more than 50 countries around the world. She was ranked as one of the most popular authors on Goodreads between 2016 and 2021. In 2023, she signed a new book deal with Macmillan Publishers.
