Leionema bilobum, also called the notched phebalium, is a type of shrub. It belongs to the Rutaceae family, which also includes citrus plants like oranges and lemons! This plant grows naturally only in south-eastern Australia.

Discovering the Notched Phebalium

A long time ago, in 1838, an English botanist named John Lindley was the first to officially describe this plant. He found it from samples collected during an adventure by Thomas Mitchell. Mitchell was exploring the Grampians area in Australia. Lindley wrote about the plant in his book, Three Expeditions into the interior of Eastern Australia. He first named it Phebalium bilobum. Later, in 2003, another scientist named Paul G. Wilson moved it to a different group of plants called Leionema.

Different Types of Notched Phebalium

In 2006, scientists officially described four different types, or subspecies, of the notched phebalium. Each subspecies has slightly different features and grows in specific areas:

  • bilobum: This is the original type. It grows in the eastern part of the Grampian Ranges in Victoria.
  • serrulatum: This type has longer leaves. You can find it in Gippsland, which is also in Victoria.
  • thackerayense: This subspecies has smooth-edged leaves. Its leaves do not have the "notched" or two-lobed tip that gives the plant its common name. It grows in the Western Grampians Ranges, including Mount Thackeray, and the Black Range.
  • truncatum: This type is found in the northern and eastern parts of Tasmania.
